The Radiology Department
The main x-ray department is located in the centre of the ground floor of the hospital and is ideally placed to offer a diagnostic imaging service.
The main department comprises 5 x-ray rooms, 1 fluoroscopy room, and 1 IR room.
The PACS system is an Agfa Impax network. This was upgraded to the latest AGFA system with the AGFA Enterprise Imaging System which has been in place since January 2019. Soft copy reporting is provided for all plain film examinations. All the images are now available via the hospital intranet in all clinical areas. This is integrated with a voice recognition system and nearly all reporting is now undertaken with voice recognition.
There are four satellite x-ray departments, at Newmarket, Thetford, Sudbury, and Botesdale. Plain radiographic images from these hospitals are reported at the West Suffolk Hospital.
Ultrasound
Within the main x-ray department are two ultrasound rooms, both equipped with Canon i700 units purchased in 2020, together with a new Canon Xario 200G to assist with interventional procedures. A Canon i700 also provides DVT ultrasound and a Toshiba APLIO_500 has been provided for ultrasound in Out Patients. Sonographers also undertake DVT scanning and some inpatient work as well as obstetrics and gynaecology scanning and vascular work. Ultrasound is also undertaken at Newmarket Community Hospital which is shared by Radiologists and Sonographers performing OP and GP work.
CT
There are three GE 64-slice CT scanners. A fourth CT scanner is due to be installed in the CDC at Newmarket at the end of 2024. There are teleradiology links to the consultants’ homes for viewing all imaging modalities when on-call. Home reporting is actively encouraged. Overnight CT's are reported by an offsite reporting company from 8pm until 9am.
MRI
This department, near the rear entrance, is fitted with 2 Siemens 1.5T Magnets. One was replaced with a brand new system in 2024. A third MRI scanner is due to be installed in the CDC at Newmarket at the end of 2024.
