VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION
Role: Volunteer Driver for Café Retreat
Location: East Lancashire Hospice/Café Retreat
Accountable to: Catering Lead
(This person will be your main point of contact while volunteering. They will provide you with the support and supervision necessary for you to perform your role.)

Role Summary:
To provide safe transport and collect surplus foods from various local supermarkets that support the food surplus programme. Also to deliver the foodstuffs to Café Retreat (located at East Lancashire Hospice, Park Lee Road) and correctly store the food under the supervision of trained chefs and the catering lead.
When We Need You to Be Available:
The expected commitment for this role is dependent upon your availability. Transport of surplus food is required Monday morning, Wednesday morning, and Friday morning specifically. Each collection will take approximately 2 hours from start to finish, but no more. On some occasions, there may be no surplus food from the supermarkets that donate the food. We will devise a communication system whereby you can contact the supermarkets directly to determine whether they are making donations on that particular day.
What We Would Like You to Do:
* Undertake training and development applicable to the role.
* Communicate sensitively and appropriately to patients, relatives, staff, volunteers, and visitors at all times.
* Respect all information concerning volunteers, employees, and patients as strictly confidential at all times.
* Follow guidance on lone working and manual handling to ensure your safety.
* Ensure that your vehicle is safe for purpose, with a valid MOT certificate (if required) and comprehensively insured to undertake transportation and compliance with annual checks.
* Ensure that you are fit to drive, informing the Volunteer Transport Coordinator of any health issue that may affect your driving ability.
* Provide as much notice to the Volunteer Transport Coordinator if you are unable to undertake a pre-arranged duty or are unavailable to provide transport to allow alternative plans to be made.
* Collect surplus foods at the specified time, ensuring punctuality and polite communication.
* Abide by the traffic laws, the Highway Code, and drive with consideration to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers.
* Report any incidents or accidents (however minor) to staff as soon as possible.
* Work at all times to safeguard the rights of individuals, promoting their wellbeing and protecting those at risk from harm, acting on any concerns related to safeguarding children and adults at risk in line with policy and local guidance.
* Complete our in-house Blue Steam mandatory training modules - Accident and Incident Reporting / Adult Life Support Level 2 / COSHH / Cyber Security / Safeguarding Adults / Safeguarding Children / Preventing Radicalisation / Mental Capacity Act / Information Governance / Fire Safety / GDPR / Domestic Abuse / Equality & Diversity / Principles of Health & Safety.
What We Will Do:
* Pay for your reasonable travelling expenses on your journeys being verified with the use of the AA mileage calculator at 45p per mile.
* Provide you with information and training on communication skills, lone working, and safe manual handling.
* Organise journeys in the same geographical location as your home address where possible.
* Provide details of allocated journeys on Friday each week.
* Provide contact and support if you encounter any difficulties in this role.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Qualities Required:
* Full driving license, a good driving record, and driving skills.
* Good verbal communication skills demonstrating courtesy, compassion, sensitivity, and professionalism.
* Punctual and reliable.
* Ability to use email and access to an email account is preferable but not essential.
* Smart, presentable appearance.
* The ability to respond flexibly to changing needs and priorities.
