About the Role: Since 2010, Findmypast has been working with the British Library to digitise their extensive newspaper collection. Through this partnership, Boston Spa has been the home of Findmypast digitisation studio.
The studio is responsible for scanning large volumes of newspaper content from microfilm and hardcopy as well as historical records and registers. Each year the studio produces millions of images, and the Digitisation Project Manager is vital to this workflow.
This Digitisation Project Manager role is based in the British Library building in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire. The normal working hours are 35 hours per week, 9:00am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday. The role reports to the Head of Digitisation and Content Publishing Operations and manages a team of digitisation operatives. The role contributes to the digitisation of newspapers and records, ensuring specific instructions are followed to a high standard and liaises with partners and other stakeholders.
The appointment of a successful candidate is subject to passing an enhanced background check.
Here’s what the role involves:
1. Team Management: Lead, motivate, and manage a team of digitisation operatives, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality output.
2. Project Coordination: Oversee the digitisation of large volumes of newspaper content and historical records, ensuring adherence to project guidelines and timelines.
3. Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure digitised content meets high standards of accuracy and clarity.
4. Relationship Management: Liaise with partners, including the British Library, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution and resolve any issues that arise.
5. Technical Oversight: Ensure the proper functioning of digitisation equipment, troubleshoot technical problems, and coordinate maintenance and upgrades as necessary.
6. Operational Scheduling: Balance resources across day and evening shifts to ensure adequate coverage and that project priorities are consistently met.
7. Reporting: Provide regular reports on project progress, team performance, and any operational challenges to the Head of Digitisation and Content Publishing Operations.
About you:
Essential skills and experience:
* Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop staff.
* Demonstrative knowledge of workflows and production in an operational environment.
* High level of attention to detail to ensure the quality and accuracy of digitised content.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with various stakeholders.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues and find efficient solutions.
* Proficient in Excel.
Desirable skills and experience:
* Degree in a relevant field such as Information Management, Library Science, History, or similar.
* Consideration and respect for history and historical items.
* Proven experience in content digitisation/data projects.
* An interest in history and archive material.
* Proficiency with digitisation equipment and software, including scanners, microfilm readers, and image editing tools.
