An exciting new role for a Family Integrated Care Junior Sister/Charge Nurse has arisen for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking nurse/midwife with experience of working in a clinical NICU setting. The job will play an integral role in supporting the Family Integrated Care Lead in ensuring that a family integrated care ethos is embedded within the service.
The post is open to candidates with suitable experience and a commitment to supporting staff and improving care. The role will require an individual with good leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. They must be able to demonstrate an understanding of change management, team dynamics, and appreciate the demands of delivering an efficient and effective service which meets the requirements of neonates and their families.
You will be part of an MDT working within a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the Southwest Neonatal Network serving the northern part of the network. The unit has 34 cots comprising of 8 intensive care, 8 high dependency, and 18 special care cots.
To ensure that nursing practice is contemporary, the role will include a Band 6 clinical shift once a week, supporting the NICU roster. A minimum of 34.5 hours over 4 days per week will be considered.
Main duties of the job
* To work closely with the family integrated lead to promote, support and assess a Ficare culture across all aspects of neonatal care.
* To work closely with the multidisciplinary team.
* Collaborate with nurse education teams to promote and deliver Ficare teaching for both parents and staff to maintain an excellent family experience.
* Work alongside infant feeding leads, lactation consultants to support the unit in achieving and maintaining UNICEF Baby Friendly Accreditation and promote breastfeeding initiatives across the perinatal service.
* To support the lead in the development of family-focused care and measure achievements and outcome improvements by undertaking regular auditing of the nursing care quality indicators and parents' experience.
* Proactively participate in relevant groups and meetings to promote a Ficare approach in all forums, such as handovers, safety huddles, and staff meetings.
* Engage and work alongside the MDT with appropriate Neonatal awareness campaigns e.g., Kangaroo Care, World prematurity day.
* Be an advocate for embedding the ethos of 'parents as partners in care' - empowering staff to educate and support parents to be fully involved in the provision of care and decision-making.
* Alongside the lead and MDT develop clear guidelines, signposting documents, and referral pathways to ensure staff awareness of resources, profession, and charitable services available to families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
* To take charge of the Neonatal unit on a regular basis, acting as shift coordinator and will undertake designated management roles.
* Will actively participate and promote practice development and the creation of a learning environment.
* To be able to work independently and flexibly.
* To provide clinical, educational, and emotional support to parents/carers.
* Supporting the development of parent engagement in the service.
* Build and maintain relationships with Network and local community groups to help facilitate appropriate referrals for individuals and families.
* Deputise for the Lead Family Integrated Care Nurse in their absence.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
* RGN/RN/RNC/RM
* Teaching and Assessing course
* Approved Neonatal Life Support Course
* Educated to level 6 or working towards.
Work Experience
* Experience of recent clinical neonatal experience.
* Expectation to undertake training for extended roles required by the ward/department.
* Evidence of effective change management.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
* Advanced communication skills, verbal & written to include report writing and record keeping.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Ability to undertake shift work.
* Basic computer/IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service.
* Time management/Basic Problem-solving skills.
* Demonstrate ability to motivate and lead a team.
* Involvement in research and/or audit.

* Experience of caring for babies requiring high dependency/intensive care.
