This role involves the adaptation of tasks and taking into consideration the needs and capabilities of individual children under the guidance of the Class Teacher and/or SENDCo. A vital element of the role is building long-term relationships with the children and observing individual children to understand and create a picture of their development, ability and any barriers to how they learn. Key Accountabilities General To work with a small number of named children on a 1:1 basis, under the guidance of the class teacher and/or SENDCo, to support on class projects and other areas of the curriculum. To establish a supportive, caring and secure relationship with the children, promoting respect, self-esteem and a positive, inclusive whole school ethos. To develop knowledge and understanding of the specific academic, physical and emotional/behavioural/medical needs of the children and respond to them effectively. To assist the class teacher/SENDCo with the planning, development and delivery of suitable programmes of work for the children. To support the class teacher to design, create and produce learning activities, materials and resources to support aspects of the curriculum or particular learning outcomes, and to assist and support the children in using these. To help, support and motivate the children, clarifying instructions, encouraging independent learning and behaviour and enabling learning targets and outcomes to be achieved. To contribute to monitoring and recording the children’s progress, maintaining records and providing relevant feedback to the class teacher. To provide a commitment to the school to build relationships with the children throughout their educational journey. To build strong relationships with Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants throughout the school. Additional Responsibilities Communicate effectively with the Headteacher, SENDCo, teachers, non-teaching staff, students/children and parents Participate and attend staff training days/sessions and school open days as required. Support the school with annual events (eg: Spring/Autumn Fairs etc) Comply with all school policies and procedures, especially safeguarding, health & safety and IT policy. Participate in break-time supervision and any other reasonable management instructions. Statutory Requirements Responsible for electronic record keeping to meet both statutory and school requirements e.g school management systems, Safeguarding systems Follow the school’s behaviour policy when interacting with children Report any safeguarding concerns in accordance with the schools safeguarding policy Person Specification CRITERIA Essential Desirable Qualifications, Training and Experience Maths and English GCSE ✔ An understanding of Steiner Waldorf Education and the Ethos of York Steiner School ✔ Level 2 or above teaching assistant qualification ✔ At least two years of experience working with children ✔ IT skills including Microsoft Office and G suite ✔ Personal Qualities Professional, positive, friendly and approachable ✔ Ability to relate to and inspire children ✔ Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and on your own ✔ A commitment to the school and a desire to become part of the school community ✔ Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with parents and internal and external colleagues ✔ A commitment to the school and a desire to become part of the school community ✔ A positive attitude to work, being responsible, self-motivated, pro active and flexible ✔ Resilience and a sense of humour in times of pressure ✔ Adaptability in the context of a small school ✔ Annual Leave: 28 days (inclusive of bank holidays) in the first year, 31 days in the second year before rising to 33 days after 3 years (pro-rata). There will be a 12 month probationary period.
