Modern Foreign Languages Department Information
The Modern Foreign Languages Department is a leading department at Francis Holland School and the largest department in the school. It consists of 10 teachers and is supported by 4 language assistants for French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
The department also provides additional teaching for students applying to Oxbridge or undertaking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). All members of the MFL department offer two MFL languages to GCSE level and beyond. The Department runs extra-curricular clubs and organises trips abroad and visits to plays and films throughout the year. The Head of Modern Foreign Languages directly oversees the work of the Heads of French, Spanish, German and Italian and also line manages the other members of the Department.
Being situated in central London, close to embassies, the French Lycée, and other cultural centres, as well as the City, we benefit from a cosmopolitan student intake. Many of our students come from bilingual or multilingual backgrounds, bringing a global perspective to the school. They are always eager to embrace new cultures and develop their language skills.
Modern Foreign Languages are highly popular at Francis Holland School, consistently achieving outstanding results at GCSE and A-level. French, German, Italian, and Spanish are offered at both GCSE and A-level, with all students beginning with two languages in Thirds (Year 7) and continuing with at least one language to GCSE. Results at GCSE level are among the best in the school, and we take pride in bucking the national trend of declining numbers at A-level.
