Salary: £11.67 per hour
Reports to: Head Chef
Bank work is casual/relief work offered on an ad hoc basis, as and when there are shifts available. You are free to accept or decline such offers of work.
As a member of the catering team, you will contribute to the preparation, cooking, and presentation of nutritious well-balanced meals whilst maintaining a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assist the cook/chef in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of daily meals for patients, relatives, and staff.
2. Maintain high standards in the handling and preparation of all food adhering at all times to food hygiene and environmental health guidelines.
3. Provide a high standard of customer service to patients, staff, volunteers, and relatives at all times.
4. Operate the till and demonstrate good cash handling skills, recording all catering sales.
5. Set up and prepare the dining areas, or hospitality trolleys.
6. Answer telephone enquiries and liaise with the Head Chef for additional catering orders.
7. Check food deliveries including temperature control, reading, and recording written documentation in accordance with HACCP.
8. Responsibility for ensuring cleaning schedules are adhered to, cleaning duties include washing up manually and by machine, cleaning of tiles, canopies, fryers, cold room etc. in accordance with COSHH regulations.
Health & Safety
Under the Health and Safety at Work (NI Order 1978), you are required to take all reasonable steps while at work to ensure your own health and safety and safety of those who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work. You are also required to co-operate fully with regard to the implementation of health and safety arrangements and should not interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare at work. You must familiarize yourself with and comply with all health and safety policies which are relevant to your area of work.
Report all accidents or untoward incidents immediately to your Line Manager. Be familiar with the fire drill and safety precautions relevant to your department.
Adhere to the smoking policy in operation in St. John’s House.
COSHH
Comply with all regulations in relation to Control of Substances Hazardous to health (COSHH) as set out in the COSHH Handbook.
Adhere to the regulations regarding Skin Care, Lifting and all other matters relating to Health and Safety as set out in the Staff Safety Handbook. A copy of the Handbook is available in shared folders.
Communication
* Attend meetings with Line Manager as requested
* Liaise with nursing staff when required on the personal requirements of patients; receiving instructions and ensuring these are carried out
* Co-operating with staff from other departments in matters of mutual concern.

Minimum Requirements:
* Level 2 Food Hygiene
* 6 months experience in a catering environment
* Ability to monitor and record written records
* Can work on own initiative as well as part of a team
* Good customer service and interaction skills
* Ability to take and follow directions
* Ability to carry out safe working practices
Desirable:
* Previous catering experience in a health care setting
* Catering Qualification
Southern Area Hospice Services (SAHS) consists of a 14 bed in patient unit, based in Newry, Co Down, providing specialist palliative care to patients with a terminal illness, including cancer, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.
Our Community Services offers day care in Dungannon, Newry and in the patients own home. Services include counselling and bereavement support for adults and children, therapeutic services, physiotherapy, social work and chaplaincy.
