Job summary To ensure that children and young people (C&YP) receive a high quality outpatient experience in a safe, appropriate NCIC environment, located as close to their home as possible To co-ordinate with the existing Great North Childrens Hospital (GNCH) surgeon who provides NCIC outpatient work, so enabling excellent working relationships with our tertiary colleagues and maximal tertiary paediatric outpatient work to be delivered close to home To ensure safe, high quality General Surgery of Childhood (GSoC) procedures are undertaken within the Elective Surgical Hub at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven To create collaborative links with the Operational Delivery Network (ODN) for the North East and North Cumbria To positively contribute to the Trust as a colleague by creating a C&YP focussed service through which opportunities for education, audit, research, leadership and personal growth occur within that supportive working environment To actively contribute to the "transitioning" services at NCIC - supporting young people, parents and paediatric surgical tertiary specialties link into respective NCIC adult services. Main duties of the job The appointee surgeon will be expected to undertake the following procedures in ASA1 and selective ASA2 children following paediatric anaesthetic agreement: Inguinal herniotomy >1 year old Orchidopexy where testis palpable in the groin >1 year old PPV ligation for hydrocele (most children are 3 years or older when offered) Circumcision (non-religious) where conservative measures have been unsuccessful (managed in accordance with https://4skin-health.alderhey.nhs.uk/) usually > 6 years old Umbilical herniotomy (most children are 4 years old or older when offered) Ventral (e.g. epigastric) herniotomy (when symptomatic) Excision of lumps and bumps Ingrowing great toenail surgery including use of phenol or sodium hydroxide - with active engagement with Community Podiatry colleagues for those not tolerating under local anaesthetic ring block Any other procedures must be with joint agreement of successful candidate, CD Gen Surg NCIC, other NCIC surgical specialities and GNCH colleagues e.g. thyroglossal cyst The post holder would require background experience as lead independent operator (level 4 sign off ideally) in these procedures; indicative numbers from a governance perspective for the commonest operations might be: Inguinal hernia 30 Circumcision 25 Orchidopexy 40 PPV ligation 15 Umbilical hernia 15 About us At NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding healthcare services to the population of North Cumbria.
