The Pharmacist in Charge – Retail Pharmacy is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Care New England Retail Pharmacy, ensuring that high-quality, patient-centered care is provided. This role combines operational oversight, staff management, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize medication use, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the overall success of Care New England's pharmacy services. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of pharmacy operations, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to enhancing patient care in a fast-paced, patient-facing environment.
Responsibilities
* Oversees the daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy, ensuring efficient, accurate, and timely medication dispensing.
* Designated by pharmacy owner as pharmacist in charge (PIC) of the pharmacy location.
* Maintains compliance with all state and federal pharmacy laws, regulations, corporate policies, and standards of performance. Prepares for and participates in audits by regulatory agencies and third-party payers.
* Builds a high-performing team and ensures the pharmacy is adequately staffed. Manages work schedules, payroll, and time-off requests for pharmacy staff. Supervises, mentors, and develops pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.
* Collaborates with manager on performance evaluations, identifies training needs, and provides ongoing education and professional development. Complies with human resource policies.
* Monitors and manages inventory to ensure an adequate supply of medications and supplies, while minimizing waste and loss.
* Fosters a positive, collaborative team culture focused on patient care, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
* Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to support the safe and effective use of medications, including reviewing prescriptions for potential drug interactions, allergies, and therapeutic appropriateness.
* Assists in budget preparation and manages the pharmacy’s operating expenses, ensuring cost-effective medication purchasing and dispensing practices.
* Supports strategic initiatives to improve revenue generation and enhance the pharmacy’s value within the health system.
* Oversees the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy technologies to streamline operations and enhance patient safety. Manages technology break/fix issues and access requests as needed.
* Implements quality assurance initiatives to maintain high standards of practice and reduce medication errors. Participates in quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient care, medication safety, and operational performance. Is an active member of Care New England Pharmacy Quality Management Committee.
* Participates in monthly staff meetings and provides business updates to the team.
* Assists with covering Care New England Pharmacy Leadership time off.
Job Qualifications and Specifications
Required Licensure/Certification: Applicant must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or BS in Pharmacy and be a licensed Pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.
Years of Experience: Required 5+ years, Preferred 8+ years’ experience in a clinical pharmacy setting.
Advanced education: Applicant preferred to hold advanced certification(s) such as immunization, medication therapy management, diabetic educator, cardiovascular educator. Applicant preferred to be bilingual in Spanish.
