Job Title: Lead Engineer – Civil

Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years, contributing to the UK’s Target of Net Zero. A major part of this is the delivery of the EGL4 HVDC link in Joint Venture with National Grid.
Reporting to the Engineering Section Head, you will be responsible for developing and delivering civil and structural engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering design for the EGL4 HVDC Project.
This will involve working with other specialists, both in-house and via our supply chain to develop and refine the feasibility and preliminary design stages to support the consenting process, developing Employers Requirements to support the procurement process, and undertaken design assurance of the detailed design for the project.
What you’ll be doing
1. Responsible for preparing and refining basic and functional civil and structural engineering specifications, designs, budgeting, training and quality documentation.
2. Undertake a design assurance role through the detailed design and construction phase, by reviewing and commenting on contractors designs to ensure compliance with the contract and business interests.
3. Perform all duties with and promote internally and externally a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental compliance, sustainability and continuous improvement.
4. Prepare and manage site investigation works including geotechnical and environmental considerations.
5. Ensure civil engineering designs and specifications are developed in accordance with current legislation, policies, operational requirements, PAS 2080 and BS8001 philosophy.
6. Responsible for providing technical assessment, and review of the tender submissions, and detailed designs and reporting recommendations.
7. Lead the technical resolution of site or construction issues, analyse common faults and prevent re-occurrence.
8. Provide technical support to the Pre-Contract and Project Delivery team on matters concerning the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering works.
9. Preparation of project quality documentation following agreed quality processes and provide and meet deliverables for PQP’s.
10. Manage, supervise or mentor less experienced staff within the Dept or Project Team.
11. Liaise across global engineering teams to provide end to end integrated solution.
12. Support Section Heads in the development of national and international standards or other regulatory matters related to civil or structural engineering to reflect the requirements of SPT and clients.
13. Drive industry best practice and technological advances within the project team/department. Assist with evaluation and apply ‘new ideas’, technical developments, new materials and alternative-working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies reduction in carbon footprint and improved safety.
What you’ll bring
1. Degree qualified in Civil Engineering discipline.
2. Proven significant experience and knowledge in a responsible position in the area of civil or structural engineering design works for electrical network transmission or Major Utility infrastructure projects.
3. Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
4. Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
5. Ability to represent departments or project teams regarding civil or structural engineering issues, decisions, standards or industry best practice.
6. Knowledge of Infrastructure sustainability drivers including PAS 2080, BS8001 and ISO 20400.
7. Working knowledge or previous experience in use of multi discipline BIM.
8. Develops and finalises proposals relating to the technical content of policies, standards and specifications whilst recognising the benefit of consultation with stakeholders or peers to ensure effective implementation.
9. Supports various staff in implementing appropriate remedial and long term actions in relation to civil or structural engineering failures.
10. Proven experience carrying out Designer Risk assessment.
