Locum Specialty Doctor (ST3-ST8) Job Description

Reports to: Consultant in Relevant Specialty
Working Hours: As required, including on-call responsibilities
Salary: As per NHS pay scales
Job Summary:
The Locum Specialty Doctor will provide high-quality, patient-centered medical care within their chosen specialty. The role involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients under the supervision of a Consultant. The doctor will support the day-to-day functioning of the department and contribute to the overall patient care and operational effectiveness of the team.
This position is designed for doctors in the ST3-ST8 range, meaning the candidate will have completed their core medical training and have a relevant specialty interest.
Key Responsibilities:
* Clinical Care:
* Assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of clinical conditions under consultant supervision.
* Take part in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and theatre sessions (where applicable).
* Manage patients admitted for elective or emergency care, including peri-operative care where relevant.
* Liaise with consultants, GPs, and other multidisciplinary team members to ensure integrated care.
* On-Call Duties:
* Participate in the on-call rota as required.
* Provide emergency care for patients, including attending to emergencies in the hospital.
* Teaching and Training:
* Supervise and support junior doctors (FY1, FY2, CT1-CT2) in clinical practice.
* Contribute to teaching and education for medical students and allied health professionals.
* Audits and Research:
* Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement projects.
* Engage in research activities relevant to the department where appropriate.
* Professional Development:
* Maintain and develop professional skills and knowledge.
* Engage with continued professional development (CPD) activities in line with GMC recommendations.
* Attend relevant courses and maintain an up-to-date training portfolio.
Essential Qualifications:
* Medical Degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent)
* The applicant must hold a recognized medical degree and have full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), with a license to practice.
* Completion of Core Medical or Surgical Training
The applicant should have completed their Foundation Training (FY1 and FY2) and Core Training (CT1-CT2) relevant to their specialty.
* ST3-ST8 Training Level
Applicants must be in their specialty training years (ST3-ST8), or have equivalent clinical experience in the desired specialty. Full GMC registration with a license to practice in the UK is required. Applicants should hold valid Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification where applicable (especially for Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, etc.). Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians or Surgeons is desirable but not always essential, depending on the role.
Desirable Qualifications/Experience:
* GMC Registration
* ATLS/ALS/ACLS (Desirable based on specialty)
* MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent (Desirable)
* Higher Specialty Qualification (e.g., FRCS, FRCP, MRCOG, FRCA, etc.)
* Higher qualification in the relevant specialty is an advantage.
* NHS Experience
* Previous experience working within the NHS, particularly in the same specialty, is highly valued.
* Research and Audit Experience
* Previous experience in clinical research or involvement in audit projects related to the specialty.
Skills and Competencies:
* Strong clinical skills in the chosen specialty, demonstrated by previous training and clinical experience.
* Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to manage complex patients and make clinical decisions under pressure.
* Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
