Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)
We are currently recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for various long-term frameworks across the UK.
RPS and Tetra Tech have secured a £100 million framework from United Utilities to improve river health in Northwest England, supporting projects for over 20 years.
This 10-year framework aims to optimize programs, develop solutions, and select the best options based on value, carbon footprint, and cost, fostering resilient and eco-friendly water services.
About The Team:
RPS Water Consulting comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy to water industry clients, supporting business planning and delivery. The industry offers ongoing challenges and opportunities requiring innovation, dedication, and teamwork.
In addition to the United Utilities framework, we work with several major UK water companies under long-term agreements. Our water projects are leading into AMP8 and beyond, offering long-term career growth and legacy opportunities.
About You:
You should have experience producing technical specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, and preparing reports. Familiarity with collaborative planning, design reviews, and safety assessments like HAZOPs is essential.
You will collaborate on design outputs such as General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and P&ID diagrams, and possess strong communication skills for client presentations and technical discussions.
Understanding water and wastewater treatment processes and existing infrastructure assessment are key. You will contribute to project delivery and technical development within the team.

Your Responsibilities:
1. Participate in all project phases from feasibility to construction support.
2. Work on diverse projects across frameworks with UK water companies.
3. Engage with project managers, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project success.
4. Support and mentor junior team members.
5. Review technical designs, liaise with clients, and produce asset surveys and reports.
6. Develop process and instrumentation diagrams and mechanical design deliverables.
7. Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
1. Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
2. Experience in water industry projects is advantageous.
3. Proficiency in pump design, P&ID creation, and specifications.
4. Knowledge of CDM regulations and safety design.
5. Familiarity with contract procurement methods.
6. Ability to manage work within time, cost, and quality constraints.
7. Support for junior staff development.
8. Willingness to travel to operational sites.
9. Experience with design tools like AutoCAD is a plus.
Qualifications:
1. IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
2. Chartered status or working towards it.
3. Membership with professional bodies like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
