Package description Job Reference: 21307 Band: Band D Salary: Up to £81,000 Contract type: Permanent role Location: Newcastle Job Purpose We are looking for a talented Principal Software Engineer to join the Insight Tooling department within our Data Platform area. Our teams build products that empower the BBC to make data-informed decisions. These tools provide insights into how our content and products are performing with our audiences, enabling teams across the BBC to make informed decisions that enhance the audience experience. We do a combination of back-end development on data pipelines and infrastructure built using mainly AWS, and we develop user-centric front-end products using React, Typescript, and Node. We provide information to teams across the business about how well their products are performing against the metrics that matter most to them. The BBC Engineering community is a dynamic and supportive one, and there are frequent opportunities to collaborate across the organisation. Our Engineers are all encouraged to do 10% time, which typically takes the form of a hackday every two weeks where they can work on pet projects and personal development. It is a role that will allow you to help set the engineering approach and strategy for this area. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities Definition and ownership of the Insight Tooling technical roadmap as a part of Engineering Leadership. Help the teams in Insight Tooling adopt a strategy of utilising reusable component-based design patterns. Support different teams across Insight Tooling in a hands-on capacity where needed, writing code alongside other engineers. Coordinate infrastructure and performance work across missions in Insight Tooling Lead on overall technical strategy, communicate decisions to the team and external stakeholders and share rationales. Operate across multiple Epics and Features, providing support and guidance. Advocate for Engineering best practice and architectural principles. Coach and mentor less experienced engineers. In addition, you will: Represent Insight Tooling in the wider BBC Engineering community. Understand and stay abreast of developments in the broader industry, bringing knowledge back to the team. Lead on Product Group Engineering initiatives involving teams outside of Insight Tooling. Knowledge share with BBC teams working in in similar spaces. Co-ordinate Engineering initiatives with Insight Tooling client teams. Define and consult on requirements for Insight Tooling products. Provide advice, estimates and feasibility on initiatives in Discovery. Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience The following criteria are what we would like to see in our candidates. Essential: Strong experience designing and developing software in Typescript/JavaScript. Strong experience with NodeJS. Expertise of using a modern React stack. Expertise in leading the adoption of design systems, and component design patterns. Experience of leading teams in the adoption of engineering best practices. Experience of working across discipline and team boundaries in an engineering capacity. Experience of building and maintaining complex infrastructure on AWS (e.g. Elastic, Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, Redshift, Cloudwatch) Experience of making highly available, resilient systems and services with good knowledge of observability. Expertise with CI/CD pipelines. Expertise in test driven development and testing across the development lifecycle Leadership experience of project working and professional software development processes. Can lead, coach and mentor less experienced engineers. Desirable: Experience engaging with industry forums and interest groups Experience of leading large-scale change programmes across engineering teams. Has experience of recruitment and supporting hiring processes for engineers.
