Job summary
The successful candidates will be posted at Abergele hospital, our elective orthopaedic hospital, which is only a few miles from the acute & trauma hospital which is based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. This is a great opportunity to work in the beautiful North Wales area. We are just a few minutes from the beach and close to the Snowdonia National Park. We are a Trauma Unit, with our local Major Trauma Centre in Stoke (North Midlands NHS Trust University Hospital).
Main duties of the job
You will mainly be responsible for the peri-operative care (pre-operative and post-operative) of elective orthopaedic patients. You will also have the opportunity to attend some elective lists but this is not guaranteed as a regular acitivity and will depend on availability. You will however gain significant experience in managing trauma patients in our fracture clinics at the trauma hospital. If you are interested there will be the opportunity to undertake trauma on calls at SHO and registrar level depending on need.
It is a great post if you are currently or are keen to revise and pass your MRCS / FRCS Orth exams or are working towards your CESR application or want to have a relaxed quality family time, as you will plenty of time, in and out of work. It is also extremely financially rewarding (14 session job), more than anywhere else, for this type of post.
There is weekly trauma and orthopaedic teaching. Extra teaching can be arranged for anyone sitting an exam. We have a good track record for our doctors going on training rotations, successful in their Fellow exams and successful with the CESR applications. We have a great library and staff. The department consists of 11 consultants working on a trauma rota and a further consultant performing only elective surgery. About us
To provide Trauma and Orthopaedic Services: Trauma and selected high risk electiveservices are based at the base hospital at Glan Clwyd Hospital and consists of TraumaClinics and Trauma & Elective Theatre sessions.Elective Orthopaedics is at present based at Abergele Hospital, Abergele approximately6 miles from the main hospital base. Clinics are held at several Community Orthopaedic services at Abergele Hospital consist of elective theatre sessions andother elective services related activities. However, it is expected that there would begradual transfer of elective services to the base hospital in the future.

You will work in a team structure with your consultant, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your team and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time). However, the appointee will be mainly based at Abergele Hospital and from time to time be working in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd thus providing a comprehensive exposure to both Emergency and Elective care on a regular basis. It is possible that the successful appointee will be working outside his team structure on occasions, but consultant supervision will always be ensured.
