Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations
(Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
1. Exercise of general professional duties
2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
* (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.

2. A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions from the principal or the board, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned.
Key Responsibilities
1. Planning
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
3. General
* Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
* Providing advice on educational and social matters, including careers;
* Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
* Communicating with parents and external bodies;
* Participating in relevant meetings.
4. Assessment/Reporting
* Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils.
5. Staff Development
* Participating in staff development schemes;
* Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
* Advising on curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
6. Discipline/Health and Safety
* Maintaining good order and discipline;
* Safeguarding pupils' health and safety;
* Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.
7. Public Examinations
* Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.
8. Management and Administration
* Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
* Managing or coordinating work of other teachers;
* Participating in curriculum and organizational reviews;
* Handling administrative tasks like attendance and resource management.
9. Work Hours and Days
* Available for 195 days/year, with up to 190 days involving teaching;
* Work hours and duties specified by the principal;
* Teaching hours limited to weekly maximums as per regulations;
10. Staff Cover
* Providing cover for absent teachers under specified conditions.
