Job summary A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join the newly developed, award winning, OWLS service in Leeds Childrens Hospital. The OWLS (oncology and haematology walk-in liaison service) is based in the Childrens Haematology and Oncology day unit and the in-patient wards L31/L33. This service won the patient involvement in safety at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Patient Safety Conference this year. The highly specialised team provide holistic and expert care to children and young people with malignant conditions and non-cancerous conditions of the blood. This service has been developed to care for the patients within this service who attend the unit acutely unwell. This position is ideal for a motivated and experienced nurse who is looking for a new challenge and would like to develop their leadership style at a band 6 level. The successful candidate will join an experienced and dynamic wider team who are committed to improving the experience and treatment of children and young people. You will require excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work well within a team. Full time and part time applications will be considered. Previous experience within Haematology/Oncology is not required as full education and training will be provided. However, haematology and oncology experience or emergency care experience is preferable. Expected Shortlisting Date 08/02/2025 Planned Interview Date 17/02/2025 Main duties of the job As a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse Specialist, you will undertake and be responsible for the clinical management and co-ordination of high quality, safe care for patients who are acutely unwell with a haematology or oncology condition. You will be responsible for triaging the patients, both over the phone and when they attend the unit for assessment. You will follow up patients who have been assessed by the team within 24 hours. You will liaise regularly with other agencies in health, social care and education and work as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team. You will support training, education and staff/service development across the unit. This is a particularly exciting time, where you will help the management team to implement new ways of working across the wards and improve patient safety and experience. The OWLS service is a team of nurses who cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
