Your role
The role of Senior Station Technician is aimed at individuals with an NVQ Level 4/SVQ Level 5 in an engineering discipline, a time-served engineering apprenticeship, or a sound background and experience in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering.
If these qualifications or experience are not held, suitable individuals may be offered a Station Technician role instead.
As a Station Technician, most of your time will be spent ensuring that the Shannon class ALB and its equipment operate at the highest standards, managing the Lifeboat Station effectively, and assisting in training volunteer crew members—so that in an emergency, you, your crew, and your lifeboat are fully prepared.
You will not be solely responsible for the lifeboat and its equipment; our existing mechanic volunteers will support you, your training, and maintenance activities. The wider lifeboat staff and volunteers will also support you in all other aspects of the role.
Your role will include:
* Inspiring and motivating your team; leading them through seagoing exercises, conducting shore-based training, identifying improvement areas, and sharing your knowledge.
* Engaging with the public about your station’s work.
* Leading on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environment issues to foster a positive safety culture within the station.
* Managing the day-to-day operations of the Lifeboat Station, such as handling emails, maintaining maintenance records, or updating the station’s monthly assurance report.
About you
You’ll be skilled at building effective relationships with volunteers, supporters, and RNLI staff, acting as an ambassador for the station and the RNLI within the community.
To be considered for the Technician role at Kilkeel Lifeboat Station, you will need:
* To be a qualified RNLI ALB Mechanic or have relevant experience to achieve competence promptly.
* To demonstrate leadership and management qualities, with the ability to motivate and develop people’s potential.
* Experience as a Lifeboat Technician or similar role, with a willingness to develop skills in other areas of seagoing duties.
* Knowledge and experience of marine diesel operation, maintenance, and repair are desirable; an engineering background is essential.
This is an emergency response role, so the successful candidates must live within a reasonable distance from the station and be prepared to respond to a pager 24/7 while on duty.
Maritime mechanical skills are not mandatory; experience working on cars, HGVs, agricultural machinery, plant equipment, or generators can be adapted through training.
If you are ready for an exciting challenge as our new Station Technician at Kilkeel, and you see yourself as a natural leader capable of inspiring and motivating a dedicated team, please apply via the button shown.
