We are seeking a dedicated and confident Higher Level Teaching Assistant to deliver Functional Skills English sessions to Key Stage 4 students in a Pupil Referral Unit. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students who may have previously struggled in mainstream settings.
The School
A well-established PRU that supports students who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. The school offers a nurturing and structured environment, with a strong focus on social, emotional and mental health support. Students are taught in small groups, and the staff team is committed to helping them re-engage with education and develop essential life and academic skills.
The Role
As the HLTA, you will be responsible for delivering Functional Skills English lessons to small groups of KS4 learners (no more than 8 students at a time). You will work with the support and guidance of the English lead and will deliver pre-planned lessons that meet the individual needs of the students.
Main Responsibilities
1. Deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons for KS4 students.
2. Work with small groups of students, adapting materials and content to suit varying ability levels.
3. Support students with SEMH needs to access learning in a positive and supportive way.
4. Provide regular feedback on student progress to teaching staff and SLT.
5. Assist in creating a safe, calm, and respectful classroom environment.
Minimum Requirements
1. HLTA qualification or equivalent level of experience.
2. Experience delivering English or literacy-based content.
3. Excellent behaviour management and relationship-building skills.
4. Understanding of SEMH and the challenges students in PRUs may face.
5. Ability to work independently and use initiative.
6. Previous experience in a PRU or alternative provision.
7. Experience teaching Functional Skills.
8. Trauma-informed or de-escalation training (e.g. Team Teach).
