Job summary The University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Renal unit is the largest provider of secondary and tertiary renal care in Europe, offering comprehensive Nephrology, dialysis and transplantation services. The transplantation element of the unit covers a catchment area of over 5 million across the wider west midlands region. As well as being one of the largest, the unit at QEH has a positive reputation for its services, and has active involvement at a national strategic level. The QE Renal Unit celebrated its 50th year in 2018, during that time the team have performed over 6000 kidney transplants, including over 1000 living kidney donor transplants. We have since celebrated completing 210 transplants in 2023/24 which was the second most prolific year on record. Renal Surgery is looking for a dynamic Consultant Surgeon to join the team. The successful candidate must have an interest in and job plan configured to provide a Peritoneal Dialysis service as well as the ever growing transplantation service. The post will be based in the Department of Renal Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Main duties of the job The post will comprise of the following key components: Maintenance and development of the cadaveric transplant programme Contribution and support to the living donor transplant program Delivery and development of vascular access surgery Deliver and support the Peritoneal Dialysis Service Quality improvement and / or research activities in transplantation and vascular access Contributing to the postgraduate and undergraduate training commitments of the unit. The job plan is based on a standard working week. Whilst sessions are indicated there may be flexibility from week to week based on clinical case-load and team support. A job planning meeting will be held following Trust induction. There is a 1 in 8 commitment to the Renal Surgical on call rota (covered prospectively).
