Maintenance Technician
Reports To: Assistant Property & Estates Manager
Salary: £24,000 - £25,000 per annum
Working Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, working a shift rota which will include weekend work and bank holiday working, including New Year’s Day (time off in lieu will be given for working on Bank Holidays) with occasional requirements to work evenings.
Purpose of the role: This role is to support the maintenance and presentation of a historic site, buildings, services and facilities, to ensure that all visitors, volunteers, staff and clients experience the best possible environment during their visit.
You may also be involved in event preparation. As we are a visitor attraction, being able to multitask, adapt to changing priorities and generally get stuck into anything that is needed to support the Museum is critical to the success of this role.
Main areas of responsibility:
* Be an effective part of the team fulfilling maintenance needs across the site which may involve:
o Minor mechanical and plumbing repairs and fault finding.
o Basic carpentry and building repairs.
o Preparation, painting and decorating.
o Grounds maintenance including grass cutting and the use of tools and vehicles and litter picking.
* Assisting with the set up and de-rig for events. This might include the installation of portable toilets, electrical systems, audio visual equipment, barriers, gazebos, signage and other event specific items as required.
* Carry out reactive and planned preventative maintenance across the site and completing maintenance records as appropriate on our streamlined work order system via handheld device.
* Working at heights, carrying out PPM’s, various breakdowns and working outside in all weathers occasionally. Machines on site include cherry picker, MEWP, forklift, tractor and trailer, ride on mower, tug, and golf buggy; training will be given where necessary.
* Assisting the Assistant Property & Estates Manager with monitoring work carried out by contractors and/or volunteers for quality, value and health and safety compliance.
* Maintaining storage areas, workshops and compounds in a tidy and safe condition and ensuring that material is safely stored within them.
* Assist with the disposal of waste material including scrap metal, oil paint and other material in a safe and compliant manner.
* Assisting in the preparation for extreme weather conditions including clearing snow/ice as well as assisting with building/collection protection measures such as moving items to safety.
* Maintaining and using snow-clearing equipment and stocks of salt, grit and sand.
* Assisting the Assistant Property & Estates Manager to identify and co-ordinate maintenance works that can be carried out by volunteers throughout the week.
* Help to co-ordinate the tasks carried out by maintenance volunteers, working alongside them to provide support, practical supervision and to ensure safety/site standards are upheld.
* Ensuring all tasks are completed in a safe manner according to Museum policies and risk assessments.
* Undertake a first aid course and be part of the Museum first aid response team.
Health & Safety:
* Ensuring care of your own health and safety, as well as that of others who might be affected by the actions of the Maintenance Teams.
* Work collaboratively with our H&S Advisers.
* Comply with all licensing regulations.
* Work with other staff members to meet any legal requirements or duties to help maintain a safe and productive work environment.
* Identify, assess and manage risks proactively to safeguarding the Museum’s interests and ensuring the successful achievement of our objectives.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
* Previous experience of CMMS systems desired (work order software) but training will be given.
* Microsoft Word.
* Skills and knowledge required to be able to carry out a broad range of maintenance and service tasks required for museum operation.
* Full car driving licence essential (forklift licence, cherry picker licence or scissor lift licence an advantage but training can be provided).
* Experience of working closely in a team including allocating tasks and overseeing standards.
* Confidence working at height - Access to Tower (PASMA) Training an advantage.
* Basic understanding of either CCTV systems, automated gates, AV systems would be an advantage but is not essential.
* Basic mechanical and plumbing skills.
* General building, handyman, repair, painting and decorating skills.
* Practical problem-solving skills.
* Attention to detail.
* Positive approach and a ‘can do’ attitude with a willingness to be flexible and ‘get stuck in’ as needed. Good communication skills with the ability to adapt your approach to suit your audience, and conduct all interactions with staff, volunteers and members of the public in a calm, professional, engaging manner, especially when under pressure.
* Full First Aid at Work certificate (or willingness to obtain the qualification).
