Job Description:
Do you have practical conservation experience and good knowledge of conservation practices? Would you like to get hands-on with the Science and Industry Museum collection, ensuring it is cared for during important building works?
About us
The Science and Industry Museum, Manchester, is undergoing an exciting extensive estates project to restore the historic listed buildings on the site of the world's oldest surviving passenger railway. We are closely monitoring the estates work around the museum collection, ensuring it remains cared for and not impacted by building works.
We are now recruiting for a Conservator (Capital Projects) to join on a fixed-term contract until 31st October 2025. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week and is based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.
About the role
As Conservator (Capital Projects) you will conduct both preventive and interventive museum conservation. You will work closely with the other members of the Conservation & Collections Care team, based at SIM and potentially other SMG sites.
You will ensure appropriate methodologies are used, including condition checking and appropriate documentation. In addition, you will undertake interventive object conservation where appropriate, be involved in object movement, display conditions, and object protection.
You will manage the rolling preventive conservation programme and share data. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.
About you
Joining us you will have a relevant conservation qualification or equivalent practical experience and knowledge. You will have good knowledge and practical experience of conservation practices and experience working as an individual and as part of a team.
Crucially for this role, you will have the ability to complete work within set deadlines and in time-sensitive situations. You will also have good knowledge of and the ability to use practical application of manual handling, collections hazard management and writing Risk and COSHH assessments.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
