Complete formal training with weekly 4 hours of personal study time and 4 hours 1:1 training time, plus spend the rest of the working week in the Practice acquiring mixed hybrid clinical and administration skills. This role also must adhere to the GPA Core Competency Framework and be able to meet and demonstrate attainment of specific assessment criteria; building a portfolio of evidence and demonstrating the required knowledge, skills and behaviours essential to the GPA role and be able to demonstrate on a tracker how they have improved clinical thinking and reflection against key areas of the framework. Competency framework: General Practice Assistant (e-lfh.org.uk).
Responsibilities include:
1. Completing simple clinical observations/investigations as directed locally, such as dipstick urine, taking blood pressure, ECG, and Phlebotomy.
2. Assisting patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
3. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms, etc.
4. Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
5. Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies, e.g., getting an on-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s).
6. Sorting clinical post and prioritising for the GP.
7. Signposting some post to other members of staff.
8. Extracting information from clinical letters that needs coding; adding this to patient notes.
9. Supporting with QOF reviews.
10. Participating in an annual individual performance review.
11. Remaining in regular contact with the Lead GP to constantly review progress of the role and request professional development as needed.
12. Being aware of their own professional boundaries and what to do when they are reached.
