The Project Controls Apprentice is primarily responsible for developing a practical understanding of the business, project management and project controls in line with the course plan of their apprenticeship qualification.

What you’ll do at work
What will you be doing?
It is expected they will be completely new to an office environment and will therefore need to focus on standard office skills and behaviours alongside the more technical and industry-specific knowledge. As they progress, they will be able to undertake limited project controls activities as delegated by their Project Controls Manager under supervision and guidance from more senior Project Controls staff.
Cost Control
* Utilise SAP to generate cost collection codes, extract data, and produce cost reports
* Work with project and work package managers to generate estimates of cost for new work packages and the remaining cost (Estimate to Complete, ETC)
* Gather and validate actual costs for work packages
Planning & Scheduling
* Become familiar with a project schedule, being able to identify and communicate the critical path, describe upcoming activities and progress made, and compare this to the baseline
* Extract reports, data, and periodic lookaheads for projects and work packages from the schedule
* Conduct periodic schedule updates for progress made and future reforecasting
* Know the quality standards for a schedule and be able to assure schedules against these
RAID Management
* Understand the project RAID log and be able to describe the risks and their impacts to the relevant work packages
* Be able to produce standard RAID reports such as TopN, Due
* Mitigation Actions, and Contingency Drawdown Curves
* Update individual risks with risk owners, including revising impacts and updating mitigation actions
Document Control
* Interface with document control systems, uploading/ downloading documentation and extracting data for status reporting
* Issue, track and log transmittals
* Conduct non-technical documentation reviews
This is a training role and as such there is an expectation the role will not be able to work autonomously and will require daily supervision and direction by more senior project controls staff.

Course contents
* Develop work breakdown and coding structures to meet the scope laid out in the projects’ technical information and specification, ensuring that the controls will monitor project progress and performance accurately.
* Manage data: source, retrieve, check, edit, format, record and analyse data – using it to create relevant time, cost and resource reports.
* Estimate: develop cost estimates for defined scopes of work, create appropriate benchmarks, analyse quotes from sub- contractors and suppliers, and input to tenders and the early stages of projects.
* Schedule and plan: break down the scope into activities to create a logical linked control schedule to input to the development of outline and integrated plans and baseline schedules; identify critical milestones; gather accurate progress data for controlling the schedule; and monitor progress.
* Cost engineer and control: prepare control budgets, carry out cost control activities, gather and interpret cost data, monitor progress on a regular basis, interpret trends and forecasts; keep in line with contractual requirements, maintain baselines; ensure accurate reporting and control.
* Monitor progress/performance and analyse data: associated with milestones, schedules, progress, manpower, resource and costs; undertake earned value analysis, create progress reports and identify variances from plan and likely consequences if no corrective action is taken.
* Use computer based technology: model potential trends and resource use etc. using the right software package for the right task.
* Problem solve: recommend early corrective actions to reduce variances, identify issues and risks, present and maintain related action plans and contingencies.
* Effectively communicate: with good interpersonal skills and share the right information with the right people in an appropriate format to enable effective project control.
* Input to project closeout: generate key benchmarks and outturns including lessons learnt.
* Observe and apply professional ethics, and maintain a duty of care.
* Apply safety in the context of the role: comply with relevant national and international health, safety and environmental requirements.
* Work in accordance with company management systems, policies and procedures: especially those relating to quality, data security, risk, change and document management.
Your training plan
As part of your Apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a nationally recognised Level 3 Project Controls Technician apprenticeship standard via our training partner, Learning Skills Partnership. Your apprenticeship typically takes 27 months to complete and is fully supported through a combination of regular online lessons, e-learning materials, and access to their team of experts for 1-2-1 advice and support.
