Our client is looking for a real people person and the business is fortunate enough to have a genuinely nice, non-toxic environment and its important that this person fits right in and doesnt apply a micro-manager management approach. What you need to have:
Whats your management style? Are you a suppressive micro manager or overly blunt? Or are you an enabler, a supportive, collaborative and relationship based manager? Youll probably guess which one our client wants. At this level, youd have not just management experience, but management of managers.
Lets talk about data. Now this is as important as the management experience. This element is non-negotiable and for the person to thrive (and even get by) in the role, theyd need to be in our clients words, a whizz at taking datasets and manipulating numbers. A few examples of what they need: Turning gross sales to net or vice versa Calculating raw sales in to invoiced sales by adding/removing returns Converting Euros/Dollars to Stirling or vice versa Calculating % variance against multiple metrics to spot issues / trends Generating charts/graphs off a dataset and comfortable with Pivot Tables
Forecasting and analysing data. Youve probably guessed it by now, this is very data heavy. Live data too. Making quick decisions based on factors such as PPC (Pay-Per-Click) and working with their external marketing agencies. In a nutshell with this metric there is a balance between cost of advertising, revenue of sales from the advertising and their ROI from all of this. Think of this like the stock market. Youd take a birds eye approach and keep your eye on the ball. When the ROI % is too low, you take action X and when its surplus (thats great) you do action Y.
Goes without saying, this person will be a seasoned manager. An excellent and confident communicator by nature. Able to lead by example and influence their team, wider colleagues and stakeholders. We want a real team player. An honest and nice person, but somebody able to take quick control when its needed too.
Summary of the role in our clients words: Review reports & dashboards with the ability to effectively summarise the trading situation in to a meaningful narrative for others Identify actions that should be taken from the trading data and potential opportunities that should be further investigated Assisting the two reporting Managers with managing their partner Agencies particularly from a higher level, strategic view. Identifying opportunities and challenging plans or reports if needed Working closely with the Head of Dept to forecast sales across all sites in multiple markets Completing detailed forecasting templates that estimate Sales, Marketing, Overheads & Profit Responsible for updating forecasts as actual results come in and reporting on YTD positions as well as flagging key variances and suggesting actions to be taken Completing ad-hoc analysis (or coaching the team on how to complete the analysis) for example; Board requests, testing trading hypotheses, providing further insights/following the data Leading the ongoing optimisation and development of our reporting dashboards to enable us to make more data led decisions and provide further insights Working with the reporting Managers to create business cases for new initiatives and ensure they have robust reporting in place to effectively measure success & take learnings forwards
