Job Title: Environmental Advisor
Location: Falmer (Brighton) Hybrid working model (2 days a week in office/site)
Salary: up to £45,000 depending on experience
Job Summary:
The purpose of this role is to provide specialist environmental advice and support to key stakeholders across the business on a range of water resource management issues including drought, leakage and supply interruptions. This will involve working closely with internal teams and senior managers as well as external partners such as regulators and NGOs to develop and implement effective solutions which minimise environmental impacts and reputational damage for the company. The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations and company policies in relation to environmental aspects of water resources management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide expert technical input into development of short-term and long-term drought plans to ensure minimum environmental impacts while meeting customer demand during drought periods.
2. Lead on the development and implementation of leakage reduction strategies to minimise environmental impacts associated with water loss.
3. Support the Water Resources team with water supply interruption planning and delivery, identifying potential environmental risks and developing mitigations where required.
4. Ensure all actions taken to address drought, leakage or supply interruptions are undertaken within the legal framework and best practice guidance, taking account of any environmental designations (e.g. SSSIs) which may apply.
5. Liaison with regulatory bodies such as EA and Natural England regarding drought and other operational activities.
6. Managing and maintaining relationships with local environmental groups and community representatives.
7. Monitoring and reporting on environmental performance against targets and KPIs, highlighting areas of concern and proposing improvements where necessary.
8. Assisting with production of internal reports and correspondence to customers and regulators on drought, leakage and supply interruption activities
9. Identification of opportunities to improve environmental performance through changes to operational processes and procedures.
Qualifications:
10. Experience of working in a highly regulated industry, ideally water or utilities.
11. Strong understanding of environmental policy and legislation in relation to water resources management.
12. Knowledge of drought management and leakage reduction techniques and technologies.
13. Understanding of water supply operations and infrastructure.
14. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
15. Ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
16. Highly organised and able to prioritise competing workloads effectively.
17. Proactive approach to problem solving and decision making.
