We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Research Assistant to join our collaborative research team at Aston University. This exciting project addresses the urgent need for improved treatment options for epilepsy. Approximately 30% of the 1-2 million people affected by epilepsy in our target population do not respond to conventional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), highlighting the need for innovative drug delivery approaches.
In this role, you will focus on formulating and characterising novel drug delivery systems—such as nanoparticles and microneedle patches—to enhance AED efficacy and central nervous system (CNS) uptake. You will also develop in vitro cellular models to evaluate these systems, contributing directly to cutting-edge research with the potential to transform epilepsy care.
Key Responsibilities that this role entails are to, design and formulate novel drug delivery systems, including nanoparticles and microneedle patches, perform laboratory experiments focusing on drug release kinetics, efficacy assessments, and formulation characterisation. To develop and optimise in vitro models to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of drug delivery systems and investigate the metabolic aspects of epilepsy treatments through biochemical and molecular analyses.
We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about scientific research and has a strong background in pharmaceutical sciences, molecular biology, or a related discipline that has experience in drug formulation and delivery systems, particularly nanoparticles and microneedle patches, proficiency in molecular biology techniques (e.g., Western blotting, Seahorse assays, cell culture) and a strong analytical and data management skills, with attention to detail.
