The stroke unit at Chesterfield Royal is a 35 bedded unit, consisting of a mixture of hyper acute, acute and rehabilitation beds. Initial first assessments of stroke patient’s takes place in our emergency department where our stroke clinical nurses specialist provide an assessment to determine the pathway of care a patient requires.
Patients then require prompt transfer to our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit within a short time frame to administer lifesaving clot busting treatment where stroke patients continue to receive level 2 ( 1 nurse to 2 patient) care within their first 72 hours of admission. Patients are closely monitored through neurological and cardiac assessment to identify any signs of deterioration.
After 72 hours these patients are stepped down to our acute beds to continue to receive medical intervention and holistic care. The patients are then stepped down to our rehabilitation beds where they receive daily therapy input and regular reassessment by our team of staff to promote and encourage independence.
We provide not only inpatient care but also lead a community service (Early Supported Discharge Team) with nurse lead stroke clinics.
Within our unit there are multiple different learning opportunities in which we have created a bespoke training package to ensure you are provided with the correct skills to confidently and competently manage stroke patients.
