Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport NZ, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, and Health NZ - Te Whatu Ora. It supports schools and kura to improve the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi through healthy eating and drinking, and quality physical activity.
Sport Canterbury is seeking a motivated, proactive and collaborative Advisor to join the Healthy Active Learning team based in Timaru as maternity leave cover from term 2 2025 until the end of term 1 2026.
A Healthy Active Learning Advisor works with primary and intermediate school leaders, kaiako, kaimahi and community organisations to enhance the accessibility, quality and quantity of Physical Activity within schools. This includes play, active recreation, sport and Health and Physical Education. This is achieved by:
1. the delivery of targeted professional development for kaiako & kaimahi,
2. developing and maintaining relationships between schools and community Physical Activity providers, and
3. the implementation of systems, structures and processes that support the sustainability of work completed.
This is a full-time fixed-term role based in our Timaru office and serving the South Canterbury region. It may also occasionally involve work with the community outside of normal working hours. As a Healthy Active Learning Advisor, you will have:
1. A relevant tertiary qualification preferably education.
2. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Health and Physical Education and Hauora curriculum with practical delivery experience.
3. Thorough knowledge and understanding of effective pedagogical strategies that support quality delivery of the Health and Physical Education and Hauora curriculum.
4. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum and/or Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
5. Experience in designing and facilitating professional learning and development opportunities.
6. Experience in leading change in the school setting and influencing at different levels (Boards of Trustees, management, teachers, whānau/community).
7. Knowledge of the systems, structures and operating models that underpin the primary and intermediate schools |kura, sport, active recreation and play sectors across Aotearoa.
8. Knowledge and understanding of how the sport and education sectors interact to deliver PE, sport, active recreation and play opportunities for tamariki.
9. Experience in planning, managing, and prioritising multiple and competing tasks and projects to meet deadlines and produce quality results.
10. A high level of verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and communicate effectively to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences.
