About the role
Hammersmith and Fulham is a dynamic and ambitious West London borough working with major partners including Imperial College; BBC; Westfield; Ikea; Berkeley Group; HS2; and the OPDC. We have a large expanse of river frontage and a landmark Civic Campus opening later this year, offering a futuristic working environment. Our strong industrial strategy, Upstream is creating a new tech city west and has already generated £6billion of high-growth business investment and over 13,000 jobs.
You’ll be dealing with a wide range of applications from householders and changes of use to complex masterplans within our Opportunity Areas. We have a dense housing stock with a rich heritage; a cultural and sporting presence with three major football stadiums and some of the biggest developers in the UK who are very active in our regeneration areas. As a trusted member of a team, you’ll work closely with residents, a range of stakeholders, and support your manager; you’ll have excellent interpersonal skills and be a responsive approach to workloads across teams, deadlines and new ideas.
There are up to 3 Planning Officer positions on offer, including potentially two at Senior Planning Officer level. We will tailor the work to your experience and even at junior level there will be opportunities to assist more experienced officers on major and strategic applications. At senior level, and as you develop through our career grade structure, there will be opportunities to lead on more complex borough-wide sites. The roles involve flexible hybrid working, with working from home as well as days working in the office.
You will need good written and oral communication skills and be able work collaboratively both within the organisation and with external organisations. You should have an ability to handle conflicting pressured situations whilst putting forward cohesive logical planning arguments on behalf of the Council. You should be able to effectively manage a caseload with multiple deadlines.
As a council we are making effective use of digital technology to improve our service delivery and are keen for all officers to be involved in developing these initiatives.
We have a supportive management team to help nurture our staff and this job presents an opportunity to develop a range of planning skills including enhancing negotiation as well as mentoring skills, and reviewing officer reports. It’s a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills, experience and career.
