As a Substation Supervisory Engineer (SSE) you’ll be responsible for day to day leadership of National Grid Fitters for maintenance work and defects within an electricity substation environment including all types of high voltage plant and equipment. You’ll support the Operations Manager with the planning of resources and development and progression of staff, Line management and delivering performance of team members. Managing sickness and disciplinary processes, performance reviews, and creating a performance driven culture. The work is predominately maintenance, so you’ll be out on site with overalls and hard hat as it’s not just an office based job, there are high priority projects to deliver and the management of external contracts ensuring planning and resource for our customers. The SSE will also be setting NG staff and contractors to work via permit system and issuing Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) however you will need to be a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) to complete this so you will start training for SAP which will take approx 18 months to complete. This will require short stays away from home at our training facilities at Eakring in Nottinghamshire and other sites to complete a portfolio of works. You will also provide standby on rota for emergency readiness and black start. Key Requirements Your minimum qualification is a Level 4/HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Supervisory experience in an engineering environment. You must be able to commit and attend training courses at our Eakring site in Nottinghamshire which will require short stays away from home. You’ll also have an excellent understanding of Safety and Environmental legislation, practices and policies, and hold a current Full UK driving licence. The role will require you to be authorised as a Category 1 Full SAP and part of a standby rota, due to this you will need to be within 45 minutes travel of Northfleet Substation. Desirable – a wide range of experience on substation related assets such as switchgear, HV cable systems, Protection and Control, encompassing electrical, mechanical, civil and telecoms engineering disciplines.
