Location: Loughry Campus, Cookstown

Hours of work: Full-time. 37 hours per week. Monday to Friday. 9am to 5pm.
Rate of pay: £12.59ph
Duties of the Role:
Purpose of this role is to assist in the daily running of the Loughry campus Chemistry laboratory to deliver education to students and support to the food industry.
Main duties include:
• Undertake analysis to support education delivery and technology transfer projects.
• Prepare equipment and material resources required for delivery of all practical classes.
• Providing the necessary support to laboratory and lecturing staff in the supervision of student practical classes.
• Provide supervision and support to final year students undertaking practical work within BSC (Hons) final year research projects and within additional educational activities including student projects.
• Deliver results against instructions accurately and in line with expected deadlines.
• Prepare laboratory reagents and solvents.
• Conduct regular laboratory checks.
• Make appropriate laboratory records.
• Participate in CAFRE promotion activities through the demonstration of relevant science.
• Ensure results are validated through carrying out appropriate quality checks.
• Undertake Building Officer duties when required.
• Assist in stock maintenance of appropriate consumables, using best practice in stock control to facilitate minimal wastage.
• Work as a member of a team, valuing the contribution of others and forming co-operative working relationships with all colleagues.
• Work with, support and provide cover for other laboratory team members to achieve results.
• Communicate with work colleagues, recognising when issues/events need to be referred to a line manager.
• Communicate with other colleagues and Branches as required to deliver duties of the post.
• Take an active part in,and contribute to team meetings.
• Demonstrate work tasks and related procedures to new members of the team, other staff, visitors and students.
• Complete all work in line with Loughry laboratory quality standards and technical operating procedures.
• Maintain laboratory equipment in a satisfactory working order including calibration of balances.
• Maintain the laboratory facilities in a clean and tidy state.
• Comply with CAFRE policies for handling and management of both paper documents and electronic files.
• Assist in improvement initiatives to service, product or process.
• Participate in the development, validation and introduction of new techniques/processes/equipment into routine use.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures in relation to Health and Safety and Equality e.g. COSHH.
• Identify and managing risk, reporting any issues to their manager.

Essential Experience: GCE/GCSE ‘O’ levels, grades A – C in English Language, Mathematics and Double Award Science or 2 Science subjects (to include Biology, Chemistry or Physics). And at least 1 year experience carrying out scientific analysis in a laboratory
Desired Experience:
1. GCE ‘A’ level passes (A to E) or equivalent, in 2 separate subjects, one of which must be in Chemistry.
2. Experience in a teaching environment
