Mechanical Engineer
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer - Wagons to join a leading freight operator in the UK.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the company's wagon fleet, contributing to the smooth running of their rail operations across multiple regions. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, with a focus on continuous improvement and technical development.
The key responsibilities for this Mechanical Engineer role are:
1. Act as a Safety Leader to ensure all engineering activities are carried out in a professional and safe manner, minimizing risk to assets, personnel, customers, and suppliers.
2. Provide dedicated engineering support to the rolling stock fleet, with a specific focus on wagons, in alignment with production and operational goals.
3. Assist in the development of engineering standards for rolling stock, ensuring compliance with both company and industry regulations, working closely with the Fleet Engineer and Head of Engineering Standards.
4. Lead investigations into failures or incidents, identifying root causes and providing recommendations for corrective actions.
5. Monitor the performance of rolling stock to drive improvements in safety, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
6. Contribute to the development and implementation of modifications, standards, and procedures as part of the company's engineering change process.
7. Manage technical projects that focus on enhancing fleet safety and performance, while also identifying cost-reduction opportunities.
8. Provide technical expertise to the procurement and materials management teams, ensuring the correct standards for materials and services.
9. Collaborate with maintenance contractors, overseeing performance and addressing any issues that arise.
10. Work alongside the Fleet Engineer to develop rolling stock maintenance standards and provide ongoing technical support.
11. Support incident investigations and be on-call for technical advice and crisis management as required.
12. Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of rolling stock maintenance processes, identifying best practices and implementing new methods to enhance efficiency and safety.
13. Build strong working relationships with internal teams (e.g., production, procurement) and external stakeholders (e.g., contractors, suppliers) to ensure smooth communication and alignment of objectives.
14. Provide technical support during emergency situations, including on-site attendance to assess and resolve any urgent issues related to rolling stock performance.
15. Contribute to strategic planning for rolling stock fleet life cycles, ensuring timely maintenance, renewals, and replacements are aligned with long-term business objectives.
Experience and skills required for this Mechanical Engineer role are:
16. A minimum of 5 years' experience in rolling stock maintenance, with a broad understanding of fleet management and engineering processes.
17. Engineering qualification at HND level (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
18. Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification is required.
19. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Excel, AMS, Database systems, and TOPS.
20. Experience in technical project management and rolling stock improvement initiatives is highly desirable.
