Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS) is a clinically led, networked pathology service. With a dedicated workforce of over 500 staff, CWPS provides a range of tests using state-of-the-art technology. This post is based at the University Hospital Coventry, a busy major trauma centre. Haematology and Blood Transfusion are ISO 15189:2022 accredited laboratories.

Main duties of the job
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist Section Manager in Blood Transfusion at our University Hospital site in Coventry. This role will involve joint site management of the Blood Transfusion Laboratory, including line managing staff, creating rotas, performing PDRs, and supporting training. You will be responsible for the daily operational running of the laboratory and will be guided by the Network Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager.
For the Trainee B7 post, you must have a completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio or BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion. We will support you in completing your IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Leadership and Management or Transfusion. You will be paid a B6 until completion of the level 7 qualification, upon which you will progress to a B7.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and flexible individual to lead a team within our Network and drive improvement to deliver a high-quality Blood Transfusion service. The successful candidate will be part of a strong, supportive management team for Haematology and Blood Transfusion across the Network.
You will manage the day-to-day operations of the site, providing expert transfusion technical knowledge to staff and service users. Collaboration with other Blood Transfusion Site Section Managers, Network Quality, Training, and IT leads is essential. You will also be an active member of the hospital transfusion team and committee.
Job responsibilities
You are required to be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a relevant Biomedical Science MSc or equivalent level 7 qualification and an IBMS Specialist Portfolio or a BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion. For the Trainee B7 post, you must have a completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio or a BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion and we will support you in completing your IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Leadership and Management. You will be paid a B6 until completion of the level 7 qualification, upon which you will progress to a B7.
* Daily manage and monitor staff in the performance of routine and specialised diagnostic services.
* Design and plan departmental rotas, allocate and reallocate work schedules.
* Support the Department Manager in planning, development, co-ordination and evaluation of the pathology service.
* Record, and validate results; interpret complex results, and authorise reports.
* Co-ordinate external and internal quality assurance schemes and supervise compliance.
* Manage compliance with ISO/CPA standards and ensure delivery of services in line with these standards.
* Ensure quality assurance procedures are adhered to and maintain internal records.
* Manage and monitor maintenance on routine and complex equipment.
* Take responsibility for achieving and maintaining performance targets.
* Manage and maintain stocks of materials, reagents, consumables and equipment.
