The Consultant in Gastroenterology is responsible for providing expert care in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. This includes leading endoscopy services, inpatient and outpatient care, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams. The role also involves participation in research, medical education, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.

This role is an ongoing full or part-time placement opportunity within the fast-paced care of the Gastroenterology department.
Job responsibilities
We are seeking a Consultant to join our department in Gastroenterology. This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced clinicians to contribute to a highly regarded NHS Trust while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic healthcare setting.
* Provision with Consultant colleagues of a gastroenterology service to PAH with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the Department.
* Provision of a gastroenterology service which works to recognised guidance (such as NICE and British Society of Gastroenterology) and to targets (e.g. Cancer Waiting Time and New: FU ratio). The aforesaid would be supported by a 5 new and 7 follow-up outpatient clinic templates.
* Provision of endoscopy service which meets JAG requirements and KPIs (key performance indicators). The endoscopy session templates are based on booking 12 points per list.
* Provision of gastroenterology outpatient service at PAH, SMH, and HEH. The clinic templates are based on the Royal College of Physicians Working for Patients Specialist Clinic recommendations, with a template of 5 new and 7 follow-up for consultants/Associate Specialist (reduced by 50% for SpRs).
* Work in multidisciplinary teams (Upper GI Cancer, IBD, Harvey ward).
* Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
* Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Right to work in the UK.
* Six months NHS experience paid UK experience as a doctor within the last 2 years.
* GMC Full licence to practice.
* Gastroenterology Experience.
* Satisfactory completion of previous posts providing professional training in Gastroenterology.
* Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine or equivalent.
* MRCPCH or MRCP or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.
* Entry onto the Specialist Register or a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of the award of their CCT in Gastroenterology of the date of interview.
* Must be able to demonstrate that they have achieved the BSG endoscopy quality standards relating to diagnostic and therapeutic Upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. E.g., JAG accreditation or equivalent for these procedures.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) (desirable).
Experience
* Extensive experience in managing a broad range of GI and hepatology disorders.
* Competency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including polypectomy and hemostatic techniques.
* Experience in leading and managing teams in a hospital setting.
* Six months paid UK experience as a doctor within the last 2 years (FY2 and above).
* Valid Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Right to work in the UK.
* Clinical attachment complete.
* Advanced skills in ERCP and/or EUS.
* Expertise in hepatology or nutrition-related gastroenterology.
* Involvement in service redesign and healthcare policy development.
