Semichem is a value driven multi-product retailer with stores across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North East of England. We have 63 stores located in both shopping centres and on traditional High Streets.
A great opportunity has arisen for an analytical, commercial Buyer to join the Semichem buying team based in our offices in Edinburgh.
Working closely with the existing team, this role is ideal for those with established buying, trading and negotiating skills, gained in a fast-paced retail/discount environment.
The Role
You will be responsible for managing and developing your own categories, developing strategies and sourcing new products and suppliers, liaising with major brands, negotiating cost prices and supplier terms, and managing promotions. You will conduct regular sales analysis, review weekly trading reports, monitor new line performance and make decisions on buy volumes, deliveries and stock levels.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an experienced Buyer with an eye for product and strong commercial and trading awareness. Ideally from an FMCG category background, you should have a sharp commercial edge and a confident negotiation style. Experience in the discount/value market is desirable but not essential if you feel you have transferable skills. Applicants must be highly analytical with good numerical abilities and be able to demonstrate effective category trading. A proven background in buying is key to this role, as well as a strong understanding of the market, customer and competitors in the market in which you operate. You will have relevant experience in buying and product development, with a creative eye and an awareness of current retail trends.
What you’ll need to succeed:
1. Experience gained in a Buyer role
2. Customer focus
3. The ability to make quick data-led decisions and to be analytical
4. Strong interpersonal skills
5. The ability to influence at all levels
6. Excellent negotiation skills
