Finance Accountant - Hackney
A college in the borough of Hackney is looking to appoint a full-time finance accountant. The college is one of the largest in East London but retains its strong local identities.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide support to the deputy director of finance in the monthly and annual processes.
2. Maintain timely reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, and take responsibility for the validation and maintenance of the fixed assets register and tax returns.
3. Reconcile balance sheet accounts, complete bank reconciliations, and maintain the General Ledger, ensuring accurate posting of receivables and payables.
4. Oversee Capital Grant funding, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, proper asset matching, and managing the release of funds.
5. Maintain Fixed Asset Reconciliations, including depreciation posting, and conduct regular reviews and physical checks of assets.
6. Account for asset disposals in line with accounting standards and safeguard assets by enforcing internal controls.
7. Provide regular reports on capital purchases, budget variance analysis, and overall financial performance.
8. Manage tax and compliance activities, including VAT, Corporation Returns, and statutory filings.
9. Work with the Deputy Director of Finance to ensure timely completion of month-end and year-end processes and support the audit preparation and documentation.
10. Maintain technical knowledge of the Open Accounts system, train non-financial staff, and provide high-quality support for administrative queries.
11. Act as the operational finance lead for cross-functional improvement projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Qualified accountant or qualified by experience and actively pursuing completion of qualification.
2. Technical knowledge in dealing with VAT, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, fixed assets, and capital grants.
3. Good levels of personal IT use and a willingness to enhance these skills.
4. The ability to contribute to the long-term strategic development of the college.
5. An understanding of and commitment to Equality & Diversity and Safeguarding, with practical ideas for their implementation in this post.
6. Excellent organisational skills, including time management, progress chasing, project management, and the ability to meet deadlines consistently.
