About AssetCool
AssetCool is a pioneering startup developing advanced power line coatings and robotic deployment systems to enhance power grid efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Our innovative technologies enable live-line application of coatings and other solutions to reduce power losses, manage noise, and extend asset lifespan. With multiple large-scale projects across the UK, Canada, and Europe, we are scaling rapidly to meet increasing market demand.
We are looking for a Product Design Engineer – Robotics to lead the design, ruggedization, and manufacturing optimization of our robotic systems. This role is pivotal in ensuring our products comply with industry standards based on application including ingress protection (IPX) ratings, EMI compliance, environmental standards, and real-world deployment challenges while being cost-effective and manufacturable at scale.
Key Responsibilities
1. Final Product Design & Development
o Take prototypes from the R+D team and finalise the products ready for deployment in the field.
o Lead the mechanical and enclosure design of robotic systems, ensuring robustness, durability, and weatherproofing for outdoor/utility environments.
o Optimize weight, size, and form factor while maintaining structural integrity.
o Develop sealed enclosures and housings to achieve required IPX (waterproofing/dustproofing) and IK (impact resistance) ratings.
o Select materials for mechanical durability, corrosion resistance, UV stability, and temperature tolerance in harsh conditions.
o Work closely with electronics engineers to ensure PCB and wiring layout are protected against environmental factors including achieving EMI compliance as necessary.
2. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Production Coordination
o Design components and assemblies for cost-effective, scalable manufacturing, considering machining, injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, and additive manufacturing.
o Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and tolerances for production.
o Develop and maintain Bill of Materials (BOMs), ensuring supply chain compatibility and cost efficiency.
o Work with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure components are fabricated to specification.
o Identify assembly efficiencies and minimize part count to streamline production.
3. Testing & Certification
o Develop and execute environmental stress tests, including thermal cycling, vibration, impact, and ingress protection (IP) validation.
o Work with third-party labs for CE, UL, IEC, and other regulatory certifications.
o Perform root cause analysis on failures and iterate designs for improved reliability.
o Implement ruggedization techniques such as coatings, conformal protection, and shock isolation.
4. Manufacturing & Assembly Support
o Support prototype builds and first-article inspections, ensuring compliance with design intent.
o Work with production engineers to refine assembly processes and tolerances for mass production.
o Troubleshoot manufacturing defects and assembly challenges, implementing corrective actions.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Scale Up
o Work closely with robotics, electronics, and software teams to ensure mechanical integration aligns with system performance requirements.
o Collaborate with R&D on new product development, incorporating customer feedback and field performance data.
o Coordinate with operations and supply chain to ensure parts availability and cost control.
o Work with Manufacturing Engineers to:
o Implement manufacturing processes for robotic systems, including assembly, testing, and calibration.
o Design and implement manufacturing cells, workstations, and tooling to support robotic system assembly.
o Develop detailed workflows and procedures for robotic system production.
o Establish quality control systems, inspection protocols, and performance testing procedures.
o Ensure all robotic systems meet rigorous performance, reliability, and safety standards.
o Maintain and manage production documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), datasheets, assembly guides, and SOPs.
o Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for production-related issues.
