In this role as a Senior Microbiologist, you will be assisting the method development program of Scientific Services and providing technical assistance and operational cover to Microbiology and Laboratory Services. You will also use your knowledge and experience to aid analysis and troubleshooting across the Microbiology section and Laboratory Services.
Time management and attention to detail are essential in this role. You can demonstrate task prioritisation and show flexibility in occasional changes in hours/workload when required. You will be delivering quality outputs to key deadlines and ensuring that data is accurately recorded in accordance with the management system.
You are technically competent in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation and equipment (including chromatographic and colorimetric software). We encourage you to actively pursue continued career development through professional qualifications and chartership.
As a strong team player, you are happy to train junior staff on the correct usage of equipment and analytical methods. It is important that you have a scientific background and are accessible and available to offer advice to staff members in the Microbiology section when needed.

What will you be accountable for?
* Deputizing for the Microbiology Team Leader and reporting on Microbiology and personnel matters.
* Contributing significantly to the continuous improvement of the Laboratory and assisting with the strategic development of Scientific Services.
* Being the first contact for Managers, staff, service engineers and customers who contact the Microbiology department.
* Applying a high level of analytical skills to follow the management system and DWI requirements for validation of new methods.
* Carrying out quality audits of internal practices to ensure compliance to the management system.
* Purchasing chemicals and materials for the Microbiology section and ensuring use of equipment and chemicals are documented to ensure proper stock control and method uptime.
* Training staff on new analytical methods.
What do you bring to the role?
* Undergraduate degree in Microbiology or other relevant scientific discipline.
* At least 2 years’ experience in analytical laboratory work.
* Team management and supervisory skills.
* Effective communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
* Experience working in a water laboratory is desirable but not essential.
