Client Overview:
The client design and manufacture naval defence hardware which is exported to over 50 countries. You will be working for an established business with a strong order book and positive long-term forecast.
They manufacture a wide range of instruments and systems for the defence and civil markets worldwide. These products are in use in over 50 countries worldwide, often destined for continuous and critical use in harsh environments such as at sea, in the battlefield or at busy airport runways, where reliable operation is essential
Specific Job Responsibilities:
* The development of high quality reliable and safe electronic design, with relevant documentation in accordance with our design/quality standards and those specific to individual projects and/or programmes.
* Working with the Engineering team, and other business functions, to continually improve processes and implement changes from lessons learned.
* Maintain the Engineering review process with a strong focus on design objectives including ease of manufacture and assembly, product lifecycle maintenance, safety, and warranty.
* Working with the Team Leads to interpret technical requirements and produce, electrical schematics, PCB layouts and Bills of Material.
* To follow the product lifecycle of development opportunities from compliance to customer or market requirements through to final design review and certification within the given targets of timescale, cost and scope.
* To ensure technology is designed in accordance with design control procedures, local and international regulations and directives, harmonized and/or military standards and above all safe with minimal environmental impact.
* Be customer centric, ensuring every decision made adds real value for our direct customers and end users.
* To liaise in a professional manner with customers, suppliers and sub-contractors when necessary to establish technical requirements or provide technical support.
* Take ownership of your own continual professional development and highlight key professional development opportunities to ensure the client grows alongside its talent pool.
Job Profile:
General Responsibilities:
* Attend meetings as and when required with customers, suppliers, and other departments to discuss design requirements, schemes and project progress and where appropriate, report on these meetings within the business.
* Support the preparation of design reports and technical documentation for equipment certification.
* Proactively promote and guide on the selection of materials and compounds for the most effective and economical method of manufacture, including examining the feasibility of incorporating standard components, parts, and materials.
* Liaise with all departments to ensure cost effectiveness and efficient design for manufacture and performance.
* Involvement with outside suppliers as and when required to finalise selection of processes, materials, costs, and availability.
* Be aware of current Legislation, Codes of Practice and Operating Standards associated with the duties, as would reasonably be expected and ensure compliance where required.
* Have a working knowledge of CE & UKCA regulations and methods of compliance, drawing on the knowledge of the CE & UKCA and regulatory compliance teams.
* Work effectively within the organisational company frameworks at all levels and report back to the Engineering Manager on matters outside the limits of authority.
* Undertake other tasks as identified by the business, which are generally in line with the interests and overall development of the Company as a whole.
Knowledge & Experience:
* Minimum of 5 years’ proven electronic design experience in industry.
* Knowledge of CAD packages, such as Altium.
* Experience of using microcontrollers, RS422, RS232, Ethernet and LVDS.
* Knowledge and application of product safety and compliance.
* Knowledge and application of product development lifecycle management.
* Solid understanding of root cause and countermeasures (RCCM) techniques.
* Solid understanding and demonstrable experience of risk mitigation and ALARP.
* Solid understanding and demonstrable experience of undertaking design, safety and process FMEA.
* Ability to write and review comprehensive technical design documentation.
* Excellent problem-solving skills.
Education & Qualifications:
* Electronics Engineering Degree
* Working towards CEng
