The Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic team are an MDT comprising consultant surgeons, specialist nursing, podiatry, and physiotherapy colleagues.
The Physiotherapy team comprises a Clinical Specialist, and Specialist Physiotherapist who work as autonomous practitioners as well as alongside the clinical specialist podiatrist. There is also the opportunity to work with physiotherapy colleagues across the wider MSK teams, as well as with the specialist nurse to assess for pre-admission.
There will be a comprehensive training package to support the new post holder, and monthly training sessions for all. The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a regional centre for complex foot and ankle surgery, which provides the opportunity to work with highly specialist clinicians.
Main duties of the job
This fixed term role will focus on the gait assessment part of the advanced physiotherapists role, using computerized technology, functional assessment, and advice and exercise prescription, as well as working closely with colleagues to further the research agenda of the department. The post holder will have an attention for detail and bring skills of movement assessment into their patient management. Should there be opportunity to extend the role in the future, a wider remit could be explored in line with existing advanced physiotherapists, such as support for pre and post-operative clinics.
Job responsibilities
* To provide a high standard of physiotherapy care to a highly complex patient group in specialty.
* To provide outpatient physiotherapy support for these patients in clinics and on the day units as applicable to role.
* To provide an advisory service to patients, their families, physiotherapists, consultants, nursing staff and other health care professionals in tertiary and secondary care, both locally and regionally.
* To develop and provide specialist education and training to nursing, medical and physiotherapy staff and other members of the MDT in order to optimise each patients outcome.
* To contribute to research within specialist area, and lead service and quality improvement.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* Degree or equivalent Diploma in Physiotherapy
* State Registered with Health and Care Professions Council
* Evidence of CPD and relevant post-graduate courses
* Relevant Masters level qualification or willing to work towards
* Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
* Involvement with the relevant CSP Clinical Special Interest Group e.g., APCP
Knowledge & Experience
* Extensive post-grad experience including considerable experience as a senior physiotherapist within specialty (Master's level equivalent).
* Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
* Experience of teaching and delivering presentations
* Highly specialist knowledge of medical conditions relevant to the speciality and their impact on patient's functional abilities
* Highly specialist knowledge of the physiotherapy process and its application with the client group in the speciality
* Previous Band 7 experience
* Experience of carrying out audit projects and research
* Knowledge of undertaking research projects
* Knowledge of current NHS initiatives e.g., National Service Frameworks, Improving Working Lives
