H9 Recruitment is seeking a Shift Operations Technician for an Energy From Waste facility in Lincolnshire, UK, offering £35k-£38k plus benefits. The role involves ensuring safe and efficient operations of production activities, including fault diagnosis and compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards. The technician will work within a team, focusing on plant reliability and safety, while also participating in health and safety initiatives.
Acting under the direction of the Shift Team Leader, ensure safe and efficient operation of all production activities on site which includes an EfW high-pressure boiler and steam turbine generator, together with all associated auxiliary plant – this will be to include first-line fault diagnosis. In doing so the Shift Operations Technician also fosters an ethos of maximum plant reliability, flexibility, and availability. This is to be achieved whilst attaining high standards of Quality, Health & Environmental performance.
Role & Responsibilities
1. Carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, in accordance with instructions, and to comply with safety rules/procedures, regulations and codes of practice.
2. If aware of any unsafe practice or condition, or if in any doubt about the safety of any situation, consult their supervisor.
3. Obtain and use the correct tools/equipment for the work and not to use any that are unsafe or damaged. All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment must be stored in the approved place after use.
4. Ensure that all guards are securely fixed, and that all safety equipment and personal protective clothing/equipment provided are used.
5. Not to operate any plant or equipment unless authorised.
6. To report any accident, near-miss, dangerous occurrence, or dangerous condition to their line management.
7. To switch off and secure unattended plant or equipment.
8. To avoid improvised arrangements and suggest safe ways of eliminating hazards.
9. Not to participate in horseplay or place fellow employees in danger by their actions.
10. Adopt a proactive manner to energy usage and suggest ways of improving energy performance.
Health, Safety & Environment
1. Safe and efficient operation of the plant during steady state, start up, shutdown and emergency situations as directed by the STL from a Central Control Room and/or on the plant as required by the operational demands of the plant.
2. Ensure day to day compliance with all aspects of the Environmental Permit, reporting any non-compliance or incident to the Shift Team Leader.
3. Work within the company’s Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental System and all relevant legislation.
4. To be authorised under the safety rules to the level of Authorised Person to apply isolation, locks, and safety tags.
5. Carrying out responsibilities as defined in the companies Safety Rules and associated procedures.
6. Participate in company/site HSE initiatives including the HSE forum activities.
7. Implementing the company’s health, safety, and environmental management policies and actively participate in company/site HSE initiatives including the HSE forum activities, including procedure reviews on a periodic basis.

Key Activities
1. Carry out routine plant inspections and adjustments / operations as required collecting and recording plant data.
2. Full understanding of P&IDs.
3. Carrying out Operational Procedures to ensure that plant is in a fit and correct state for return to service following maintenance, outage or another prolonged shutdown.
4. Responding to first line and breakdown maintenance requirements as far as background and experience permits. Assisting maintenance functions in any such maintenance.
5. Undertake continuing personal development to enhance knowledge & skills relevant to the role.
6. Participating in department training and development.
7. Writing/amending site Operational procedures, implementing changes and improvements as required ensuring all procedures are relevant and accurate.
8. Carrying out simple analysis of steam cycle chemistry and implementing corrective actions to dosing and blowdown systems.
9. Defined responsibilities in responding to site emergencies.
10. Shift logging to ensure quality defect reporting and writing along with the reviewing of operational work specifications.
11. To work flexible working patterns in support of the business.
12. Ensure strict compliance with software and plant modification procedures and directives.
13. Assist in outage planning, scheduling, and co-ordination.
14. Supporting other UK business if the need arises.
15. To be on call and change working patterns where necessary to meet the needs of the business.
16. Work towards multi-skilling activities associated with Electrical C&I and Mechanical duties, including assisting maintenance staff as required – Relevant training will be provided.
17. Building and maintaining a culture of teamwork where team member’s progress towards Operational and Maintenance dual skilling and want to contribute to their full potential.
18. Able to safely operate a Counterbalance Forklift Truck, front Load mechanical shovel and grab crane. (Training will be offered to suitable candidates).
Skills & Qualifications
1. ONC/City and Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in craft skill or process/thermal production operations. This will include a good level of practical Operational/Maintenance experience/knowledge (Qualifications below this may be acceptable if accompanied by suitable experience).
2. A good understanding of all HSE aspects is a fundamental requirement, IOSH managing safely is preferable.
3. At least 3 years in power generation industry or Energy from Waste/Biomass operations and maintenance. Exposure to heavy process plant maintenance activity.
4. Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.
5. Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix.
6. Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
7. Familiar with several computer applications.
8. The individual will need to be a self-motivated individual with exceptional organisational and interpersonal skills. The individual must be suited to a culture which is entrepreneurial, fast paced, value-driven, and with very high corporate performance and ethical standards.
