Professor/Reader of Clinical Trial Statistics & Statistical Lead
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised leader in global health research and education. The Global Health Trials Unit (GHTU) plays a vital role in designing and delivering high-quality clinical trials that address health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We are seeking an experienced Professor/Reader of Clinical Trial Statistics to provide strategic leadership in statistical services, fostering collaboration and advancing evidence-based policy through research, teaching, and capacity building.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Leadership & Management
* Lead and implement the GHTU Statistics and Evidence Synthesis Strategy, aligning with LSTM’s global health mission.
* Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of statisticians, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
* Represent GHTU in discussions with funders, industry leaders, and academic partners, while maintaining professional links with statistical experts.
Statistical and Evidence Synthesis Services
* Oversee clinical trial design, power calculations, randomisation, analysis, and reporting for GHTU-supported trials.
* Lead the development of statistical SOPs and ensure compliance with GCP, ICH, and other regulatory standards.
* Act as an independent statistician on trial steering committees, data monitoring boards, and advisory panels.
Teaching & Learning Support
* Design and deliver courses in clinical trial design, biostatistics, and evidence synthesis within LSTM’s educational programs.
* Provide lectures, workshops, and tutorials on key statistical methodologies.
* Supervise postgraduate students and early-career researchers involved in statistical research, clinical trials, and observational studies.
Capacity Building & Research
* Contribute to international capacity-building through teaching, supervision, and technical advisory roles.
* Mentor trial statisticians within the GHTU and LSTM while conducting high-impact biostatistics research.
* Build research collaborations with academic, industry, and governmental bodies, and publish findings in high-impact journals.
* Lead on Statistical innovation to deliver efficient and high impact clinical research.
External Representation, Partnership Working & Income Generation
* Develop partnerships with global organisations, funders, and industry leaders.
* Lead high-value grant applications and secure external funding for research and capacity-building initiatives.
* Represent GHTU and LSTM at international forums, conferences, and scientific advisory boards.
Qualifications & Training:
* PhD in a statistics-related field
* Extensive expertise in statistical methods for clinical trials and observational studies
* Knowledge of strategic leadership principles in a higher education setting
* International reputation for excellence in statistical research, evidence synthesis, and clinical trials
* Experience designing pragmatic non-CTIMP trials in LMICs
* Outstanding record of international-level peer-reviewed publications
* Proven track record of securing significant external funding
* Demonstrated leadership in a higher education institution
