The role
The Research Centre of Excellence is responsible for all financial aspects of the University of Bristol's grant-funded world leading research. This includes Pre-Award, Post-Award support and management, as well as compliance and financial analysis.
As Finance Manager - Research Performance, you will lead a team to optimise the financial management of research activities, ensuring effective costing and resource allocation and maintaining research compliance. The role provides strategic financial insights to enhance research outcomes, working closely with key stakeholders to improve funding performance and financial processes across the University.
Interviews will be held in early April.
What will you be doing?
In this role, you will lead a team of Costing Specialists responsible for providing essential financial support and analysis for research activities across the University. The role involves ensuring compliance with financial policies, maximising income recovery, and delivering strategic financial insights to support the University's research objectives.
You will oversee the creation of accurate financial reports and monthly KPI dashboards, which will track and analyse research funding performance, highlighting trends and areas for improvement to drive better outcomes.
You will provide strategic financial advice on research budgets, cost recovery, and the financial implications of funding bids, working closely with Faculties, Schools and the Division of Research, Enterprise, and Innovation (DREI). Your insights will help ensure that financial resources are effectively allocated to support the University's research priorities and enhance research performance.
Additionally, you will drive continuous improvement in financial processes, ensuring that your team remains agile and responsive to the dynamic needs of research projects. Your role will also involve strengthening relationships with stakeholders across the University, supporting research policies that balance financial sustainability with the pursuit of academic excellence.

* Have significant experience in financial management, with a strong understanding of research funding and costings in a higher education or research setting.
* Have proven leadership skills and are passionate about developing and mentoring teams to achieve high performance.
* Excel in providing strategic financial insights and analysis to drive informed decision-making and improve research performance.
* Have experience working with multiple stakeholders, including research teams, financial colleagues, and external partners, to enhance financial processes and systems.
* Are detail-oriented, with the ability to deliver accurate and timely financial reporting, while also identifying areas for improvement and driving process efficiencies.
* Are proactive, adaptable, and thrive in a dynamic environment, with a clear focus on supporting the University's research goals and objectives.
