Position Description
Position Summary: As a tutor, the Writing Center Tutor / Data and Communications Manager assists clients with writing tasks at all stages of the writing process. The focus is on sharing strategies with examples rather than doing the work for the client.
As a data manager, the Writing Center tutor / data and communications manager also tracks, analyzes, and presents on the Writing Center’s client survey data.
As a communications manager, the Writing Center Tutor / Data and Communications Manager creates promotional content, maintains and updates the Writing Center’s websites and social media accounts, and coordinates the planning and execution of the Writing Center’s promotional efforts.
Major Preferred: Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or English majors preferred. Undergraduate students of all majors may apply.
Experience Required:
1. Must have a minimum of two semesters at Messiah.
2. Must e-mail the following materials to Prof. Rickrode, the Director of the Writing Center (rrickrode@messiah.edu):

2. the name of a faculty reference the Writing Center can contact
3. an academic writing sample
4. a communications portfolio (consisting of social media posts, newsletters, web writing, posters, design work, etc.)
Experience Preferred:
1. Familiarity with Messiah’s Writing Center (i.e. past work as a Writing Center tutor or past visits to the center to receive tutoring).
2. Strong knowledge of the skills, concepts, and conventions associated with academic writing, especially thesis-driven essays and research papers.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills.
4. Ability to get along with co-workers and to work as part of a team.
5. Ability to take initiative and to work reliably and independently.
6. Excellent written and verbal skills.
7. Detail-oriented and organized, capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
8. Proficiency in graphic design software.
9. Proficiency in Google Suite, specifically Forms and Sheets, and in Microsoft Excel.
10. Experience in social media management, event planning, marketing, videography, and/or photography.
Skills, Characteristics Required for Position:
1. Tutor / Data and Communications Manager will determine and submit their own tutoring schedule at the start of each semester.
2. Schedule will consist of 3 set tutoring hours and 3 set administrative/promotional hours.
3. Additionally required: 1-hour weekly leadership meeting with the Director of the Writing Center, Head Tutor, and Assistant Head Tutor (will be scheduled at the start of each semester).
4. Additionally required: 1-hour weekly staff meeting (will be scheduled at the start of each semester).
Primary Duties:
1. Tutoring: Assist clients with invention, drafting, revising, and editing strategies with examples.
2. Data Management: track, analyze, report on, and present on the Writing Center’s client survey data.
3. Communications and Promotions: Coordinate the planning and execution of Writing Center events (Writing Nights, student engagement fair, class visits, etc.).
4. Maintain and update the Writing Center website and Writing Center LibGuide.
5. Manage and regularly update the Writing Center’s Instagram and Facebook accounts.
6. Take photos of events and other WC activities and headshots of tutors every semester.
7. Partner with librarians and other campus staff to promote Writing Center.
8. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
Secondary Duties:
1. Attend and present at weekly staff meetings.
2. Attend weekly leadership meetings.
3. Fill-in, when possible, when other tutors request time off.
4. Cultivate partnerships with on-campus organizations such as Murray Library, YBTV, the Pulse, and The Swinging Bridge.
5. Participate in pre-semester orientation training.
6. Other duties as assigned.
