Locum Consultant in Paediatrics Diabetes

This is a locum post (10 PA) in Diabetes Paediatrics, to cover long term sick leave. Alder Hey Children's NHS Trust is a major teaching hospital serving the children of Liverpool and is a tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Cumbria, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics.
Main duties of the job
Duties:
1. Care of diabetes inpatients and outpatients.
2. Responsible for the examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of acutely unwell general medical patients.
3. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
4. Contribute to both general paediatric outpatient clinics and Rapid Access clinics.
5. Responsible for all inpatients admitted under the medical team referred by the GP or emergency department until discharged.
6. Provide advice and clinical consultation to other inpatient services as appropriate.
7. Support the GP Hotline to advise local primary care providers in paediatric case management.
8. Liaise with senior colleagues to ensure effective paediatric clinical services.
9. Teach and train medical students and junior staff within the department and wards.
10. Contribute to Clinical Governance activities in the department.
11. Participate in improvement initiatives in the department, e.g., implementation of National Guidance.
Job responsibilities
The diabetes team is currently staffed by 1.6 WTE consultants, 0.6 WTE staff doctor, 10 diabetes nurses (8 WTE), 3.5 diabetes dietitians, 1.5 clinical psychologists, 2 HCAs, and 2.2 band 4 pathway coordinators. The clinical work of the team is supported by 1 diabetes SPIN trainee and 1 GP trainee doctor.
The Alder Hey Diabetes Service looks after over 500 patients aged up to 18 years. The diabetes team regularly manages secondary forms of diabetes and provides inpatient diabetes care for patients admitted from other trusts.
Person Specification
* Possess a CCT in Paediatrics or be within 6 months of achieving CCT in Paediatrics.
* Completed SPIN Module for Diabetes as per RCPCH guidelines.
