Introduction
Priory Group is the leading healthcare provider for mental health services in the UK with an established track record of delivering high-quality clinical care. The Priory Hospital Southampton is part of the Priory group offering outpatient, day care and inpatient treatment for a wide range of mental health difficulties. The hospital is located in Marchwood on the outskirts of Southampton and comprises 40 inpatient beds across three wards.
* Sandpiper Ward: This is an acute admissions unit comprising 17 beds.
* Skylark Ward: 11 bedded specialist eating disorders Unit
* Starling Ward: This is acute admissions unit comprising 12 beds
The hospital has well established multidisciplinary teams in all wards including medical, nursing, occupational therapy and psychology input. The non-consultant doctors in the hospital include three full-time specialty doctors and one full-time resident Medical Officer.
The hospital provides for NHS funded patients and has been rated as “Good” in the last CQC inspection with “outstanding” rating in the “caring” domain.
Role
This is 1WTE substantive post equivalent to 10 PAs which has become available because of current post holder leaving for another role. The job involves providing specialty doctor support to Sandpiper ward, which is an acute admissions ward. The ward has support from the full MDT including occupational therapy and psychology. All of the patients in the ward are NHS patients from the Hampshire area and community services are actively involved in the treatment and discharge planning.
The consultant input to the ward is provided by Dr Megan Roberts (0.6 WTE) and Dr James Stallard (0.4 WTE).
There are no on call commitments associated with this post.
Responsibilities of the role are as follows:
* Routine psychiatric care and management planning for inpatients
* Joining daily morning handover meetings, MDT reviews and CPA meetings
* Working in collaboration with MDT to monitor day to day progress and evaluation of treatment plans as needed
* Completion of risk assessments and liaison with families and community services as required
* Ensure MDT completion of agreed treatment plans
* Completion of discharge summaries within 7 days of the discharge
* Leading the provision of care in the absence of the named consultant
* Preparation of tribunal/hospital managers reports and attending the hearing if agreed by the consultant or in consultant’s absence
* Participation in Clinical Governance processes of the hospital including medicines management meetings
Weekly Time Table
A job plan would be discussed and agreed with the post holder on starting the role. Following is an example of a provisional weekly time table.
* Monday: Handover, Ward Round, Ward Work
* Tuesday: Handover, Ward Work
* Wednesday: Ward Round
* Thursday: Handover, Ward Work
* Friday: Handover, Admin / Peer supervision meeting/Clinical Forum/Peer group / Individual supervision, Ward Work
Support for the Post holder
* The post holder would have access to weekly supervision from a named consultant
* The hospital has an active monthly clinical forum which is well attended. The post holder would be a member of the forum and would participate in case-based discussions.
* There is an established peer group to support with revalidation and appraisal which post holder would be welcomed to join.
* Priory supports continuing professional development and access to study leave with associated expenses is available via centrally allocated budget and approval system.
* There is a weekly peer supervision group meeting attended by specialty doctors and consultants in the hospital.
* There would be an opportunity to develop a range of non-clinical skills by participating in clinical governance framework of the hospital.
* The Hospital would provide opportunities for completion of CESR competencies if the post holder is working towards application for CESR registration.
* The indemnity cover for Priory clinical work is covered by Priory Group as part of Priory Wide Indemnity Contract.
Annual leave
The post holder will have 25 days of annual leave in addition to bank holiday.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Current GMC registration with license to practice
* Clinical skills and competencies consistent with the experience of minimum two years in psychiatry
Desirable Criteria
* Section 12 approval
* Experience of working in inpatient psychiatric settings
