The Horticultural and Controlled Environments team at Rothamsted Research is seeking to appoint 2 full time Glasshouse Assistants to work with the team providing outstanding horticultural support to the science community at our Harpenden site. The ideal candidate would have experience working in a similar role, has or is working towards relevant horticultural qualifications or similar and shows a keen interest working with plants.
The post holder is responsible for ensuring plant material remains healthy by watering research plants to correct standard, provide a good horticultural standard of plant care, set-up, and service irrigation systems, helps team to apply innovative techniques to solve horticultural problems and maintain facilities at their optimal working level ensuring facilities are prepared and ready to accept new plant material. A high proportion of the post involves cleaning the plant growing facilities and associated areas to the high standards expected by the Institute. Knowledge and experience dealing with common plant pest and diseases management techniques including the spraying of pesticides would be an advantage although appropriate training would be given.
The position is being recruited on a fixed term contract for 3 years initially and will attract a salary of £22,011 per annum for 37 hours per week depending upon previous experience. In addition to these hours, it is essential that the post holder joins the rota to provide watering during weekend periods, typically 1 in 5 weekends, and be available to cover periods when the site is closed. This will be paid in line with Rothamsted Research overtime payments.
