University Hospitals Sussex (UHSx) is seeking a passionate & experienced nursing professional to join our team as Head of Nursing for Mental Health, Dementia & Autism. An 8b role offering 37.5 hours per week, based trust-wide.
As a pivotal member of the Safeguarding Senior Management Team, you will provide senior nursing leadership & management to deliver safe, high-quality safeguarding services. This role involves:
1. Leading the safeguarding strategy & ensuring compliance with statutory regulations.
2. Acting as the clinical governance lead for Dementia, Mental Health & Autism safeguarding.
3. Supporting education, training, & workforce development to build capacity & capability.
4. Collaborating with internal & external stakeholders to drive service improvement.
You will also play a key role in providing assurance to the Trust Board & partners, chairing the Dementia, Mental Health, & Autism Operational Group & contributing to strategic initiatives across the Integrated Care System (ICS).
Qualifications: Registered Nurse (RN), RMN, or RNLD with a relevant master’s level qualification or equivalent experience.
Experience: Extensive safeguarding expertise, senior leadership in a healthcare setting, & knowledge of statutory safeguarding frameworks.
Skills: Strong leadership, communication, & analytical skills with the ability to manage complex & sensitive issues.

The Head of Nursing will be an integral member of the Safeguarding Senior Management Team supporting the Corporate Nursing Division in the delivery of key performance targets and the Safeguarding strategy. The post holder will provide proactive senior nursing leadership and management for Safeguarding for patients with Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism.

The post holder will be responsible for implementing and monitoring quality governance arrangements that are in place within the Corporate Nursing Division. In conjunction with and on behalf of the Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding, the post holder will address CQC standards, risk management, review critical incidents, identify, and review key clinical and service indicators/audit outcomes and implement information governance requirements.
The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the nursing budget(s) associated with their area(s) of responsibility.
They will be responsible for the performance and delivery of safe, high quality safeguarding services within the designated area of responsibility and providing cross cover to other areas as required.
The post holder will be required to deputise for the Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding when required.
The post holder will have management and leadership responsibilities for the following areas:
1. Determining the strategic direction of the safeguarding service in collaboration with the Associate Director and wider safeguarding SMT.
2. Compliance with statutory regulations and service quality for safeguarding at UHSussex.
3. Performance management and professional standards of Safeguarding Nurse Specialists to ensure delivery of healthcare performance standards and Trust objectives within their designated area of responsibility.
4. Ensuring UHSussex systems and processes support the safeguarding of patients with Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism.
5. Safeguarding, learning and practice reviews, including the development of action plans.
6. Strategy for recognition and response of all forms of abuse and neglect including, domestic violence and abuse, extrafamilial harm and contextual forms of abuse.
7. Assurance to the UHSussex Trust Board and ICB via the preparation of an annual report.
8. Represent the trust or as an active member of the Local safeguarding partnership and sub-groups.
9. Assurance via monthly exception reports and quarterly full reports to the Trust, ICB and Safeguarding Partnerships.
10. Assurance to the Board and other stakeholders via attendance at internal safeguarding meetings and committees.
11. Deputise for the Associate Director at the Local Safeguarding Partnership meetings and other multi agency, integrated care system meetings as required.
12. Act as Chair of the Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism Operational Group.
13. Ensuring safeguarding action plans associated with the Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism Operational Group meeting is monitored and concerns escalated to the Safeguarding Committee.
14. Monitoring of action plans in relation to external safeguarding audits.
15. Escalate concerns via the Safeguarding Strategy Committee.
16. Learning from safeguarding activity is disseminated and action plans are followed up.
17. Ensure that the provision of education and training sessions on safeguarding patients with Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism, meet the requirements as laid down in the various guidance documents.
The post holder will support the directorates in the following areas:
1. Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective senior professional nurse leadership and demonstration of competent, accountable, high quality safeguarding practice.
2. Communicating the standards of safeguarding specialist care to ensure the delivery of patient care is always of the highest possible standard and is compliant with legislation.
3. Actively support the provision and ongoing development of high quality, modern, dynamic, and patient centred services.
4. Provision of specialist safeguarding advice and support to clinical teams and senior Trust leads.
5. In liaison with Directorates and Divisions and the Local Safeguarding Partnerships to ensure safeguarding processes are adhered to, supporting resolution of any issues where they are identified.
6. Support in relation to workforce development, training, recruitment, and performance management of the specialist safeguarding teams.
