About the job
To succeed in this role, you will:
1. Supervise and support a regional team of coroners by setting performance expectations, guiding investigative practices, and promoting continuous improvement in service delivery.
2. Lead and advise on complex death investigations, providing medical and investigative expertise to ensure timely, thorough, and accurate determinations of cause and manner of death.
3. Oversee investigations with a focus on identifying systemic risks and contribute to recommendations that can prevent further deaths and enhance public safety.
4. Exercise quasi-judicial authority, including presiding over inquests where required, to support transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the system.
5. Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, including families, Indigenous communities, forensic pathologists, police, Crown attorneys, legal professionals, and the media, ensuring respectful, clear, and culturally responsive communication.
6. Represent the Office of the Chief Coroner on ministry committees, advisory bodies, and in community engagement efforts.
Meet Your New Team
Ontario's death investigation system is the largest in North America, overseeing approximately 21,000 investigations annually under the Coroners Act. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service work in partnership to deliver coordinated, high-quality, and equitable death investigations that reflect Ontario's diversity.
As the Regional Supervising Coroner for Kingston, you will join a team that values collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. You will:
7. Oversee death investigations across the Kingston Region, supported by a network of 34 coroners who report directly to you. These physicians bring a wide range of expertise and a shared commitment to public service.
8. Work alongside a team of up to four Ontario Public Service professionals who provide operational, administrative, and stakeholder engagement support across the region.
9. Collaborate with senior leadership at the Office of the Chief Coroner to advance initiatives that strengthen the death investigation system and promote equitable service delivery across Ontario.

Mandatory requirements
10. A physician who is, or eligible to be, licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Specialized Expertise
15. Extensive medical experience complemented by the ability to collaborate with and manage other healthcare professionals.
16. Investigative knowledge and skills in general and forensic investigation techniques, including an understanding of pathology, toxicology (e.g., drug reactions and toxicity), and industrial safety.
17. Understanding and application of relevant legislation and guidelines related to death investigations and inquests (e.g., Coroners Act, Gift of Life Act, Anatomy Act, Vital Statistics Act, Funeral Burial and Cremation Services Act).
