Job overview
The Plastic Surgery Service sits within the Specialised Surgery Directorate as part of the Surgical Division. The Directorate has a budget of over 11 million and employs approximately 250 staff.
The Clinical Strategy for Plastic Surgery is to build and develop our Acute Plastic service. The four pillars of our Acute Plastic Surgery service are:
1. Head and Neck Cancer
This post seeks to support our pillars through the appointment of a locum Plastic Surgery Consultant which will make a ninth Plastics Consultant team to strengthen the service.
Main duties of the job
* This is a Locum Consultant post
* The successful applicant will do joint sessions at both the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford
* The Royal Stoke University Hospital, University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust provides regional plastic surgery services to local areas as well as Shropshire, Staffordshire, South Cheshire and Wales and is a Major Trauma Centre.
* There are two specialist inpatient wards (male and female) and a Surgical Daycase and Admissions Unit in close proximity. The department is adjacent to the Centre Treatment Suite which provides capacity for the burns and dressings clinic and local anaesthetic operating lists. Most plastic surgery outpatient clinics take place in the Skin Unit in conjunction with Dermatology.
* The successful applicant will be part of a specialised MDT
* UHNM is designated major trauma centre and we are expanding to two days combined Orthoplastic trauma list
* The Job plans are subject to change on appointment and an ability to be flexible is essential
* The surgeon will participate in the outpatients prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients
* The successful applicant will take part in a future on call rota 1:7 covering inpatients and emergency referrals from GPs and Emergency Department. It is expected the individual will be available to return to the hospital if needed

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* The department is involved in a number of clinical trials both regional and national skin cancer patients
* UHNM is designated major trauma centre and we are expanding to two days combined Orthoplastic trauma list
* The Job plans are subject to change on appointment and an ability to be flexible is essential
* The surgeon will participate in the outpatients prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients
* The successful applicant will take part in a future on call rota 1:7 covering inpatients and emergency referrals from GPs and Emergency Department. It is expected the individual will be available to return to the hospital if needed
* The job plan includes sessions at County hospital. Currently the operating at County is on day case only, but the Directorate are working with Theatre to expand the scope of this in 2019/2020
* At present if for any reason an inpatient stay is required as a result of a day-care procedure, the patient will be transferred to the inpatient unit at Royal Stoke
* You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management
* There is a secretarial team which support the consultants and all other doctors and junior medical staff
* Revalidation – The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process. We have a supported electronic revalidation management system
* Mentoring – Our department encourages mentoring of newly appointed Consultants and provide all necessary support for new consultants to settle in their post.
* Equity – Appointee will have equitable working conditions to their colleagues
Person specification
Qualifications
* FRCS Plastic Surgery or equivalent, with entry on the Specialist Register. Full registration with GMC Entry on the Specialist Register or in UK Training Scheme and within 6 months of award of CCT at the time of interview
Experience
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within the Specialty. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients. Experience of working in a Skin MDT
